Spotorno combines a strong connection to the coast with historic and cultural sites. When choosing a destination, it helps to consider two questions: should the beach be the main focus of your stay, or would you also like to explore architecture and local history? The following features show what these different priorities have to offer.

Beach and sea

Spotorno has more than two kilometres of beach and crystal-clear waters. The coast is therefore a distinctive landscape feature to consider when planning your trip. If the beach and sea are important to your decision, you will find a clear focus here. At the same time, Spotorno can also be explored through its architecture and cultural history, so the destination is more than just its coastline.

Architecture and views

Via De Maestri, with its arches and small squares, is considered an almost intact example of vernacular architecture. The street offers a different Spotorno experience from the beach landscape: here, the focus is on the forms and spaces that shape the town. The ruins of Castello Di Spotorno offer a panoramic viewpoint. Together, the street and castle ruins reveal two different aspects of the town’s history: the architecture of a street and the views associated with the ruins.

Traces of history

The watchtowers on the hills around Spotorno also tell the story of the town’s defence. They were built towards the end of the 16th century to spot Turkish galleys in advance and allow people unable to fight to seek shelter in the castle. The towers and the castle belong to a shared historical story: the elevated vantage points helped detect a potential threat early, while the castle was intended to provide protection.

The Museo del Turismo, next to Spotorno’s public library, offers another perspective on the town’s history. It tells how Spotorno was discovered as a destination for holidays and spa stays. The town’s historic defences and its development into a holiday and spa destination thus represent distinct chapters. The museum complements the built heritage with a story about how the town’s significance as a travel destination developed.

Cultural details

Spotorno has five sundials. The first is a large sundial on the façade of Spotorno’s parish church; it shows the passage of the hours according to the old “uso italico” system. The Oratorio di S. Caterina preserves woodwork and elaborate paintings. Both examples draw attention to specific details: one to a distinctive way of displaying the passage of time, the other to the works preserved in the oratory. They complement the broader themes of the beach, castle and local history with different cultural aspects.

Routes and wayfinding

The right-hand path of the tourist walking route passes through terraced olive groves to the edge of Bosco della Lexea. The terraced groves and the edge of the woodland are the landmarks identified for finding your way along this section. A plaque commemorating the centenary of D.H. Lawrence’s stay in Spotorno can serve as a starting point for a route dedicated to D.H. Lawrence. It connects a specific commemorative site with a literary perspective on Spotorno, without equating Lawrence’s stay with the route itself.

Casa del Turismo, inaugurated in 2017, houses the central tourist information office, with information materials, brochures and services for visitors and residents. There is a specific restriction on activities around nearby Isola di Bergeggi: dives are permitted there only when accompanied by an authorised diving centre, and never at night. Together, these details offer different kinds of guidance: Casa del Turismo provides visitor information, while the rule applies to dives at Isola di Bergeggi.
