Bardineto combines a fortified village dating from the 13th century with a museum, a major karst complex and several trails. If you are planning a hotel stay in Bardineto, you can weigh up local history and rural life, karst formations, and hikes with marked routes and stated durations.

The castle and rural life

Castello “Del Carretto” and Bardineto’s first fortified village were built around the 13th century by the Del Carretto marquises. The castle can be reached via Via Romana. The Museo antropologico permanente offers another insight into the region’s history: it showcases practical techniques and rural crafts through thousands of rustic tools, most of them from Val Bormida. In more than 400 original displays, they illustrate aspects of everyday life and predominantly agricultural work before industrialisation. The exhibition thus connects individual objects with the ways people lived and worked at the time.

Karst landscapes and circular trails

Buranco di Bardineto is considered the largest cave in Val Bormida and one of Liguria’s most interesting karst complexes; it also contains significant prehistoric evidence. Its passages and galleries lie on several levels above an underground stream and extend for a total of about two kilometres. The first karst nature trail loops back to Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The second is about 2.5 kilometres long, entirely accessible on foot and has an elevation gain of 65 metres. Nine information panels explain the karst features and caves of Bardineto; the route reaches the upper entrance to Buranco. For planning purposes, these are two different measurements: around 2.5 kilometres for the circular trail and about 2 kilometres for the passages and galleries of the cave system.

Hiking trails by distance and duration

Sentiero n. 1 is 22 kilometres long; the stated duration is 8 hours and 30 minutes, and the difficulty rating is I. The route is suitable for mountain bikes, runs along the southeastern edge of Bardineto’s municipal area and follows the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. In sections, it passes through the municipal areas of Erli and Castelvecchio. The trail heads towards Monte Carmo, where there are expansive views across the Ligurian Riviera.

Sentiero n. 2 runs from Bardineto via Ca' Du Piccu, Cormore, Piaggia Scura and Prato Cuneo to Monte Agnellino. It is 9 kilometres long, takes 3 hours and 30 minutes, has a difficulty rating of MD and is also suitable for mountain bikes. A short climb along a forest track makes a detour to Lago Rotondo, a water-filled karst sinkhole.

Sentiero n. 4 runs from Bardineto via Località Crosa, Pianfieno and Catalano. The stated duration for the 6 kilometres is 2 hours and 30 minutes; the difficulty rating is M. This trail is also suitable for mountain bikes. The different distances and durations give you concrete points of reference for distinguishing these trails when planning your stay.

Colle Scravaion and panoramas

Colle Scravaion is a pass in the Ligurian Alps, 814 metres above sea level, in the Province of Savona. It connects Bardineto with Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena and can be reached via the main road in the municipal area of Bardineto. Hikers and cyclists value the area for its beautiful views and expansive panoramas. The pass therefore offers a distinct scenic highlight alongside the karst attractions and the hiking trails described above.
