Toirano’s history spans several periods: prehistoric traces in the Bàsura Cave sit alongside medieval features in the historic town, church buildings and an abbey founded before the year 1000. Religious processions and the Festa dei Gunbi add further highlights. When looking for a hotel in Toirano, consider whether you want your stay to focus mainly on history, religious heritage or a particular festival date.

Prehistoric Traces and Ethnographic Heritage

The Bàsura Cave preserves hundreds of human footprints, handprints and knee prints, as well as finger and charcoal marks dating from the late Epigravettian, around 14,400 years ago. These traces give Toirano a connection to a very distant archaeological past. The Museo Etnografico della Val Varatella adds a different perspective: the museum is housed in the stables of the 16th-century Palazzo D'Aste. In this way, two very different historical reference points meet—human traces from prehistoric times and a museum in an early modern building.

Historic Town Centre and Church Architecture

Traces of walls, towers, medieval houses and loggias remain in Toirano’s historic settlement. Two of the five former entrance gates also survive. These architectural features provide several tangible starting points for exploring the town’s history.

The present-day building of the Parrocchiale di San Martino Vescovo di Tours dates back to a complete reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. The church is a Baroque building with three naves. Another architectural landmark is the bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Martino in Toirano, which dates from the 14th century. The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario in the historic centre also houses a 17th-century procession statue of the Madonna del Rosario. The different dates and religious buildings make religious heritage a distinct focus alongside the older settlement structure.

Abbey, Mountain and Local Trails

The Abbazia di San Pietro nei Monti was founded by Benedictine monks before the year 1000. It stands on the summit of Monte Varatella, which offers panoramic views. A traditional procession travels from the Borgo di Toirano to the summit of the same mountain every five years. Both the early monastic history and a recurring religious tradition are therefore connected with Monte Varatella.

If you would also like to include walks in your stay, there are trails throughout the Toirano area. Conditions may vary from trail to trail; if you have a particular route in mind, check its current conditions and availability. For getting between places, the Ponte delle Giaire connects the Borgo di Toirano with Canepari. A small wayside shrine dedicated to the Madonna crowns the bridge.

Festivals and When to Visit

Every year on the feast day of 13 December, a torchlight procession takes place at the Santuario rupestre di S. Lucia. It is organised by the Gruppo Speleologico Cycnus; the organisation and details may vary from one edition to another. Check the information for the specific edition if you would like to include the event in your travel plans.

The Festa dei Gunbi celebrates Toirano’s local cultural and gastronomic heritage. During the festival, the historic centre comes alive with a route featuring traditional dishes, music, performances and folklore. The programme may vary from one edition to another. If you want to plan your trip around the Festa dei Gunbi, check the information for the particular edition rather than assuming the programme will be the same each time.

The different themes can be clearly distinguished: the cave represents very early human traces, the settlement and its buildings reflect the town’s historical development, while processions and festivals bring religious and cultural traditions to life. This can help you decide what to focus on during your stay—such as architectural history and the townscape, or a particular event date.
