Tivegna: History, Wine Tradition and a Hike to Monte Croce
Accommodation in Tivegna
Tivegna lies on a hill overlooking the Vara and Magra valleys. Sandstone portals with an old-world character, two gateways from the former walls that are still clearly visible, and churches and oratories shape the village’s historic appearance. The village’s history is joined by a wine tradition and the hike from Tivegna to Monte Croce. These topics offer different focal points for planning: architectural history, festival dates and a route through wooded terrain.
Architectural History and Churches
The first documented mention of Tivegna dates to May 19, 963. The Church of San Lorenzo Martire is mentioned in 1229; the parish church reached its present size in 1639–1642. Several centuries therefore separate the church’s early mention from the later development of its present size.
The Oratorio della Madonna del Carmine was built in 1616 for a local confraternity. The Oratorio della Concezione on Via Pié di Foce dates from 1633. The Chiesa del Palazzo is dedicated to the Madonna. These historic buildings add further religious landmarks in the village to the parish church.
A celebration of the Madonna della Neve on August 5 is associated with the old Chiesina di Piè di Foce. A celebration on July 2 is part of the local tradition at the Chiesuola della Madonna dell’Orto. The Chiesa delle streghe is linked to a legend: according to local tradition, witches built the church in a single night. Here, specific feast days stand alongside a story that explicitly belongs to the realm of legend.
Tivegna was a fortified village with a castle, tower, castellan’s house called Casa Carletti, walls and a church. Casa Carletti, the former medieval Castello, was the castellan’s house. Two gateways from the former walls are still clearly visible. Together with the sandstone portals, they convey a sense of the different architectural features that shape the village’s historic appearance.
Wine Tradition and Festival Dates
The Sagra del Vino di Tivegna began in 1970 at the initiative of local winegrowers. The festival takes place every year in the first week of September; the specific dates may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the Sagra, check the event dates for the relevant year.
At the 48th edition in 2018, handmade ravioli and Cotoletta alla Tivegnina were served alongside wine. These dishes are therefore part of a documented edition of the festival and do not describe a current menu.
Landscape and Hiking
The Villa delle Streghe is also located in Tivegna and offers a view of the valley below. The hilltop view over the Vara and Magra valleys and this view of the lower-lying valley provide two distinct landscape landmarks for the village.
The hike from Tivegna to Monte Croce starts at the parking area in Tivegna’s piazza and follows the marked CAI Trail 270. The route passes along small roads and paths through dense forests. This gives you the starting point, trail marking and route character for planning; no walking time or difficulty level is specified here. As trail conditions can change, check the current trail status before setting out.
