Isola del Cantone: Spinola Buildings and Church History
Accommodation in Isola del Cantone
Isola del Cantone brings together architectural and church history, archaeological finds, a sanctuary and forest trails. The Spinola buildings, the Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo and the Museo Archeologico dell’Alta Valle Scrivia each offer a different focus: architecture and dating, phases of church construction, and archaeological finds. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish the historic buildings by their full names and individual histories.
The Spinola Buildings and Their History
The Palazzo Marchionale Spinola stands within the municipality of Isola del Cantone, at the confluence of the Scrivia and Vobbia rivers. The Castello Spinola Mignacco is also located at the confluence of the Vobbia and Scrivia streams; it is also known as the Castello del Piano. The Spinola family probably built the castle in the Middle Ages. The recurring river names provide a shared geographical reference; the alternative name and medieval dating refer to the Castello Spinola Mignacco. A visit is available by appointment on request; check before your visit whether an appointment is possible.
The Palazzo/Castello Spinola in Pietrabissara is a separate building. It was built in the 17th century in the style of aristocratic palaces of the time and now houses the Centro Studi Storici e Storico Ecclesiastici and the Accademia Olubrense. The building can therefore be understood both through its architecture and its current institutional use.
Church History and Archaeology
The Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo brings together several phases of construction and art. The first parish building was founded by Benedictine monks between the 12th and 13th centuries. The present structure dates from the 17th century; the choir was built in 1618. In 1901, the Milanese painter Rodolfo Gambini adorned the church with new decorations. The dates refer to different parts of its history: 1618 dates the choir, the 17th century the present structure, and Gambini’s work belongs to a later artistic phase. The church’s history therefore cannot be reduced to a single year of construction.
The Museo Archeologico dell’Alta Valle Scrivia preserves archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic period to 1500. Unlike the buildings, the focus here is on the finds’ timespan. The Santuario di Nostra Signora di Tuscia lies on the road connecting the hamlet of Monterosso with Vobbietta, near the riverbed of the Torrente Vobbia. Both the connecting road and the riverbed therefore serve as specific points of reference for finding your way.
Forest Trails at Ponte di Zan
Two forest trails start at Ponte di Zan: the “Sentiero dei sette seccherecci” and the “Sentiero dell’acqua pendente”. Both share a starting point, but have their own names. This gives you two named route options with the same starting point to consider when planning.
If you are looking for a hotel in Isola del Cantone, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: the Spinola buildings, church history, archaeological finds or forest trails.
