Church and monastery history, the Tiber landscape and local festival traditions give Ponzano Romano its distinctive character.

Churches and layers of history

The present-day Church of San Sebastiano was begun in 1524 and completed in 1540. The Church and Monastery of San Sebastiano stand on a hill west of Ponzano Romano. Ponzano Romano is also home to the Church of San Nicola di Bari. Its surviving bell tower dates from the 16th century, as do the paintings inside. These two churches reveal a shared period through different features: the construction of the present-day Church of San Sebastiano, and the tower and paintings of San Nicola.

The Church of Sant’Andrea in Flumine was founded in the 6th century on existing Roman ruins. Carlomanno built the monastery in the 8th century. Inside the church are frescoes, granite columns with Ionic and Corinthian capitals, and a Cosmatesque floor. The most recent restorations of Sant’Andrea in Flumine were completed in 2004. Here, an early church foundation, an 8th-century monastery building and a much more recent restoration history come together.

The Tiber landscape and viewpoints

Near Ponzano Romano, the Tiber forms a distinctive meander known as “Fiasco.” A viewpoint behind the Palazzo Abbaziale offers views of the Tiber Valley and its meanders. The named river bend and the view across the wider valley offer two different points of interest for anyone wishing to include the landscape, as well as historic buildings, in their travel plans.

Museum and local festivals

AmenCutti is considered Italy’s first museum dedicated to Christmas. The exhibition route leads through themed rooms, including an interactive Santa Claus office. This provides the town with a distinct cultural attraction alongside its churches and monasteries.

The Festa della Natività di Maria Santissima takes place on September 8. The tradition includes a shrine decorated with flowers and lights along the entire procession route. The Festa della Zitella includes a procession in honor of a “zitella,” or unmarried woman, selected by lot. During the patron saint festival on December 7 and 8, the Sagra della Bruschetta follows the Festa della Zitella in Ponzano Romano. The Ciambella of Ponzano Romano, also known as Ciambella di San Sebastiano, is a traditional food specialty from Lazio.
