Lido Di Castel Fusano: Pine Forest, Roman History and Beach Heritage
Accommodation in Lido Di Castel Fusano
Lido Di Castel Fusano offers several distinct highlights: the Pineta di Castel Fusano, a protected area with abundant wildlife; traces of Roman roads and villas; and the more recent history of the beach. For planning your trip, it is worth considering these topics separately. That way, you can weigh nature, archaeology and beach history as distinct interests for your stay.
Pineta di Castel Fusano: Nature and Protected Area
The Lazio Region established the Pineta di Castel Fusano urban park as a protected area in 1980. Since 1996, the Pineta di Castel Fusano has been part of the Litorale Romano Nature Reserve. The two dates mark different steps: first the establishment of the protected area, and later its inclusion in the Litorale Romano Nature Reserve. The pine forest is home to abundant wildlife, partly due to its proximity to the Castel Porziano presidential estate. Nature lovers will find a highlight here that is distinct from the archaeological traces in the park.
Via Severiana and Roman Architecture
Fragments of the ancient Via Severiana’s basalt paving are still visible in the urban park. The Via Severiana was an ancient coastal road; the Via Severiana and Villa di Plinio archaeological area includes a section of it. Only limited stretches of basalt paving from the road remain visible. The archaeological area is located in the Pineta di Castel Fusano in Lido di Ostia and within the Litorale Romano State Nature Reserve.
The so-called Villa di Plinio is a Roman seaside villa complex with a square peristyle dating from the Julio-Claudian period. A peristyle is an interior courtyard surrounded by columns. One of the villa’s thermal baths contains a black-and-white mosaic: Neptune, holding a trident, stands on a chariot drawn by two hippocampi and surrounded by sea creatures. This offers two distinct aspects of the complex to explore: the layout of the peristyle and the mosaic’s maritime imagery.
A temporary closure of the so-called Villa di Plinio was announced, effective August 1, 2024, for works planned under the PNRR. Before visiting, look for a later announcement about its reopening.
Another villa in the urban park is Castello Chigi, also known as Villa Chigi-Sacchetti. It is a fortified villa. Compared with Villa di Plinio, a Roman seaside villa complex with a peristyle and mosaic, Castello Chigi offers a different architectural point of reference.
The Beach and More Recent History
Beach facilities in Lido Di Castel Fusano began to emerge in the period after the Second World War. The SPQR beach on the Castel Fusano waterfront was converted from a maritime concession into a freely accessible beach; a municipal resolution dated August 5, 2020, records this conversion. The conversion is permanent. It is advisable to check separately for current beach facilities.
The beach history adds another perspective, covering the development of bathing facilities and the conversion of the SPQR beach. When considering a specific hotel offer, check its location and terms to make sure it suits your own travel plans.
