Albano Laziale lies on the shores of Lake Albano and is also part of the Parco regionale dei Castelli Romani. If you are looking for a hotel in Albano Laziale, the lake and regional park may shape your choice of destination just as much as the Roman sites, Museo Civico and cultural events. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip—from the landscape to the history of the Castra Albana.

Lake Albano and the Regional Park

Lake Albano is the deepest of the volcanic basins in Lazio. Its waters are known for their diverse fish fauna. Albano Laziale’s location on the lakeshore gives the town a clear connection to the landscape; its inclusion in the regional park adds the character of a protected area. If you are interested in the town, you can consider these aspects alongside its archaeological and cultural attractions.

Roman Structures and Their History

An archaeological tour of the Castra Albana is one of the things to do in Albano Laziale. I Cisternoni raises a question about everyday life in Roman times: the water supply. The structure was designed around 202 AD by the architects of the Second Parthian Legion to supply water to the Castra Albana and the surrounding homes.

The Villa Imperiale di Pompeo Magno also combines historical context with specific measurements. Pompey had it built between 61 and 58 BC. Its ground-floor area is almost entirely preserved today, measuring about 340 metres long and 260 metres wide; it covers around nine hectares. The remains are located in Villa Doria, a public garden. Some ruins can be seen along the garden paths.

The Terme di Cellomaio are also known as the Terme di Caracalla. Emperor Antoninus Caracalla commissioned them as a conciliatory gesture towards the legionaries of Albano. A guided tour through the Museo Civico is required to visit. Check the dates before your trip if you would like to see the baths.

Museum and Religious Art

The Museo Civico houses 4,400 archaeological finds dating from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Renaissance. This number may change as exhibitions are updated. The collection therefore spans a period extending well beyond the Roman structures.

In the Catacomba di San Senatore, frescoes depict Christ between Saints Peter, Paul and Lawrence and a saint who is difficult to identify, as well as Christ with the Virgin Mary and Saint Smaragdus. The catacomb was created in an area previously used as a pozzolana quarry. Its use for burials and religious rites seems to have begun around the 3rd century and continued until the 12th century. This cautious dating is part of its history.

Mountain Biking and Cultural Events

Mountain biking is described as particularly suitable for circling Lake Albano and reaching the ruins of Alba Longa. Check trail conditions locally before planning your ride. This active pursuit can be distinguished from visits to Roman sites and cultural venues, while still keeping the lake in view.

At the beginning of September, the Bajocco Festival brings circus and music performers to Albano Laziale, where they engage with the audience through art. If you would like to attend, check the current dates before your trip. The Festival Liszt Albano was founded in 1986 by Maurizio D’Alessandro to commemorate the relationship between Franz Liszt and Albano Laziale. This relationship already existed in the summer of 1839, during Liszt’s first trip to Italy.
