Formello: History, Art and Landscape

Formello brings together architectural history, art and the local landscape. Highlights include a 14th-century watermill, a Christian burial monument, a historic residence and the Valle del Sorbo. Art is also represented by the Museo dell'Agro Veientano and the Centro per l'incisione e la grafica d'arte. If you are looking for hotels in Formello for your stay, thinking about what interests you most may help: are you particularly interested in architectural history, visual arts, nature or local cuisine?

Buildings and Their History

The Mola di Formello is a watermill built by the Orsini in the 14th century. It remained in operation until the 1950s. Its construction and the end of its use are therefore far apart in time: the mill spans the period from its medieval origins to its use in the 20th century, giving local history a long timescale.

In the second half of the 15th century, Palazzo Chigi was converted from a defensive building into an aristocratic residence. Villa Versaglia was conceived by Cardinal Flavio Chigi as a summer residence in the Formello countryside; the complex includes a chapel dedicated to San Francesco di Sales. The two buildings reflect different purposes: a defensive structure later given the character of a residence, and an estate designed as a summer residence with a chapel.

Art and the Via Francigena

The Museo dell'Agro Veientano includes a version of a 13th-century tower renovated by Andrea Bruno, with an exhibition about the Via Francigena. In the Sala Velly, the museum displays rotating exhibitions of etchings by Jean-Pierre Velly (1943–1990). The subjects offer different points of focus: the tower and exhibition connect architectural history with the Via Francigena, while the Sala Velly focuses on the graphic work of a single artist, shown in rotating exhibitions.

The Centro per l'incisione e la grafica d'arte is dedicated to promoting graphic arts, drawing and printmaking. Unlike the Sala Velly, whose focus is on Jean-Pierre Velly's etchings, the centre covers several areas of graphic art and drawing.

The Valle del Sorbo and Regional Connections

The Valle del Sorbo lies between Campagnano di Roma and Formello and is protected as a Site of Community Importance (SIC) because of its high natural and environmental value. In the Valle del Sorbo, in the Roman Campagna, tuff gorges shape the landscape; the Cremera River flows through them. The Via Francigena passes through the Formello area. A protected landscape and a connection to a regional route are thus distinct aspects of the surrounding area.

Local Cuisine

Formello's local cuisine includes Padellaccia, a spicy dish made from minced pork for sausages and cooked in a pan. Crostata di porsaraghi is a local tart, or dessert, made with fruit that has a characteristically sweet-and-sour flavour. The cuisine therefore features two distinct highlights: a spicy meat dish and a fruit dessert defined by the fruit's sweet-and-sour note.

Planning Your Visits

The Catacomba di Monte Stallone is a Christian burial monument dating from the 4th to 5th century AD. Advance booking is required for visits; check in advance whether a guided tour is available on the last Sunday of each month. Access to the Villa Versaglia site is also possible only with an advance reservation. The arrangements differ: for the catacomb, check the tour date and book; for Villa Versaglia, reserve access to the site. Check dates and arrangements before your trip.
