Cineto Romano: Castle, Gorge and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Cineto Romano
For your trip to Cineto Romano, two distinct focuses sit side by side: the historic center clustered around Castello degli Orsini, with its churches and religious traditions, and the gorge landscape along the Rioscuro and the Coleman Trail. Which side you give greater weight to may shape your choice of travel dates and excursions. This lets you plan local history, nature and hiking as distinct focuses of your trip.
Local History and Architecture
The historic part of Cineto Romano is clustered around Castello degli Orsini. Built in the 11th century, the baronial castle has arrow slits and Ghibelline battlements. The Church of San Giovanni Battista houses a painting by Vincenzo Manenti depicting Saint John the Baptist in the desert.
Other places offer different historical perspectives. In the 16th century, Pozzo delle Morge was designated as a prison for capital crimes. La Spiaggia is an archaeological site; the Roman post station “ad Lamnas” once stood here. Santa Maria delle Grazie lies outside the built-up area and currently consists of a small single-nave church. The castle, painting, former prison designation and archaeological site thus represent different themes in local history.
Gorge Landscape and Coleman Trail
Cineto Romano lies above the valley of the Torrente Ferrata. Olive groves, meadows, forests rich in wildlife and numerous streams characterize the surrounding landscape. The protected natural monument Torrente Rioscuro lies in a deep river gorge along the Coleman Trail between the Monti Lucretili and the Monti Simbruini. The Cascate di Rioscuro consist of several waterfalls formed by the Rioscuro River within a gorge. A hiking trail leads to the Cascate di Rioscuro.
The Coleman Trail offers another hiking focus. The Camerata Nuova–Cineto Romano stage connects the Monti Simbruini with the Monti Lucretili and offers sweeping views toward Terminillo and Velino. The Monti Simbruini and Monti Lucretili parks established the Coleman Trail in memory of a four-day hike by Enrico Coleman and Edoardo Martinori in 1881. The river and waterfalls are the main attraction at the Cascate; the Coleman stage connects mountain ranges and sweeping views. This lets you distinguish between two different themes when planning your excursions.
Religious Festivals and Local Traditions
San Rocco is honored in Cineto Romano each year on August 16 with a religious celebration. This includes a solemn procession in which the statue is carried through the streets of the town. A public auction in the piazza determines the next Festarolo. They keep the statue for a year and organize the celebrations.
The annual rite of blessing the grain takes place on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption; the sheaves are decorated with colorful ribbons. The celebration of Sant’Antonio on June 13, 2026, ended with a solemn procession. It carried the saint’s blessing to the homes of the town. The traditions have different emphases: San Rocco combines a procession with the selection of the Festarolo, while the grain blessing centers on decorated sheaves.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
You can reach Cineto Romano by car via the A24 dei Parchi and the Vicovaro–Mandela exit. The Roma–Pescara railway line provides access via Mandela-Sambuci station. If you want to plan your stay around a particular celebration, check the exact date in advance. If you plan to walk to the Cascate di Rioscuro, it is also advisable to check current access conditions before setting out.
