Artena: Medieval History, Museums and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Artena
Artena combines a medieval historic center with archaeological collections, churches and cultural events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Artena, you can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests: the old town and its architectural history, museums or the annual Palio delle Contrade. Access conditions also vary depending on your destination and should be taken into account when planning your trip.
Arco Borghese, Palazzo and Churches
The restored Arco Borghese is considered a national monument and a symbol of Artena. Visitors enter the medieval historic center through the arch. Palazzo Borghese was originally built in the 13th century by the Counts of Segni. During a renovation, two pre-existing building sections were joined to form a single structure.
The churches also reflect different periods: the Chiesa del Santo Rosario was officially consecrated on September 29, 1591; the present-day Chiesa di Santa Croce was built between 1659 and 1661. The Chiesa di Santo Stefano dates back to the 11th century and has been altered several times, particularly after the bombing in May 1944. The statue of the Madonna delle Grazie is kept in the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Letizie.
Archaeological Traces and Collections
The Parco Archeologico di Piano della Civita was first the site of an important pre-Roman settlement and was later incorporated into the Roman sphere. The Museo Civico Archeologico “Roger Lambrechts” is housed in the Granaio Borghese. It preserves Roman and pre-Roman finds from the area; the collection spans from the Copper Age to the 8th or 9th century AD.
Museikè offers a different story of collecting: it houses a museum of traditional folk musical instruments and an extensive ethnographic archive. The Museo del Rugby Fango e Sudore displays 1,600 jerseys and a further 15,000 objects. Artena thus brings archaeological finds together with collections on music, ethnography and rugby.
Routes and Access Conditions
The historic center is inaccessible to motor vehicles; it has narrow lanes and stone ramps. To reach the Chiesa di Santo Stefano, walk from Piazza della Vittoria up the paved steps of Via Cavour. There is no access for people with disabilities. By contrast, the Museo del Rugby Fango e Sudore is accessible and easy for everyone to visit.
The two archaeological sites have different directions for reaching them by car: the Granaio Borghese is accessible via Via Fleming. The approach to the Parco Archeologico is via the steep climb on Via del Santuario. It then continues across the flat area by the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Letizie to Via del Piano della Civita; from there, the destination is about two kilometers away.
Palio, Outdoors and Seasonal Cuisine
The lower open-air area of Villa Borghese hosts the Palio delle Contrade every year. The event takes place in early August and lasts ten days. Ten districts compete with poems and songs in dialect. If you’re planning your trip around the Palio, check the exact event dates in advance.
In Civita di Artena, visitors can sit on Big Bench 434. A valid fishing license is required to fish in Lago La Torre. Nocchiata Artenese is a seasonal local delicacy: prepared at Christmas, it consists of hazelnut brittle with honey, wrapped in bay leaves.
