Anzio offers several distinct reasons to visit: the memory of the landing, traces of the ancient city, as well as the coast and sailing. When looking for a hotel, it helps to decide in advance which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The museums cover different periods of history; archaeological structures reveal different building styles and later uses. The beach, geological features and port each offer a different perspective.

Museums between the landing and antiquity

The Museo dello Sbarco opened on the 50th anniversary of the Anzio landings and is housed in a room in Villa Adele, a 17th-century building. It displays authentic uniforms and weapons, medals, documents, battle plans, photographs of veterans and everyday objects. The collection thus brings together military objects, written and visual records, and items from daily life.

The Museo Civico Archeologico focuses on a different era: it presents material evidence of ancient Anzio, from its beginnings through the imperial period. The works on display include mosaics and frescoes from the imperial villa known as the Villa di Nerone. Those interested in the museums can therefore distinguish between the history of the landings and an archaeological collection spanning a broad period.

Archaeological remains and architectural forms

Traces of Anzio’s earliest fortifications survive at Vallo Volsco. These include the cut sandstone wall on the western side, sections of wall made of sandstone blocks on the northern side, and deep defensive cuts on the eastern side. These different features give the fortified area several architectural facets: cut rock sits alongside masonry and cuts in the terrain.

The Teatro Romano in Anzio is a small performance venue on Santa Teresa hill. It was discovered and excavated in the late 1920s. Its cavea, or audience area, is supported by radially arranged wedge-shaped sections of mixed masonry. A circular central passage runs through a barrel-vaulted section; side entrances connect it to the orchestra area. This description makes not only the performance space but also the building’s internal layout easier to understand.

After the Teatro Romano was abandoned, its vaulted corridors were occupied in late antiquity by at least three kilns used to produce terracotta objects. This reveals two distinct uses of the same site at different times: first, a performance venue, and later, the craft use of its corridors.

Coast, geology and sailing

The geological features are another distinct area of interest. The Solfatara of Tor Caldara consists of several mineralized-water springs and emissions of hydrogen sulfide gas. It is associated with secondary volcanic activity in Lazio. Nero’s Grottos beach, in turn, lies within the archaeological area of Nero’s Imperial Villa in Anzio. Here, the coast and its archaeological setting meet in the same place.

Sailing is a traditionally practiced sport in Anzio. Porto di Anzio has 500 berths for sailboats and yachts. For transit, the port has 20 berths for vessels up to 50 meters long. Capacity figures and berth specifications may change. If you include these details in your plans, check the latest information from the port.

Choose your hotel stay based on your interests

To choose a focus, first consider whether your trip will be mainly about the museums and archaeological remains, the coast and geology, or sailing. There are also different aspects within the historical theme: the landings, ancient Anzio through the imperial period, and the later use of the theater corridors each offer a different perspective. With these priorities in mind, you can then apply your personal accommodation requirements when searching for a hotel in Anzio.
