Varco Sabino: Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Varco Sabino
Varco Sabino offers two ways to plan your trip: explore the natural beauty of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve, or discover the historic traces of Varco Sabino and its districts. When looking for a hotel, you can use these themes to decide what you want your trip to focus on.
Nature and the Trail Network
The Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve includes Varco Sabino and protects around 3,600 hectares of particularly valuable natural areas. Around 70 percent of the area is covered by predominantly semi-natural coppice woods and productive chestnut groves. The mountains around Varco Sabino also offer opportunities for excursions into unspoiled nature.
The reserve’s trail network includes around 90 kilometres of continuously marked and maintained trails. When choosing a route, it is worth checking its course: CAI 325 starts at Fosso della Mola below Varco Sabino and leads to Fonte Le Forche on the southern slopes of Monte Navegna. The “Laudato Si” trail runs between Ascrea and Forche di Varco Sabino. This gives you two different options: a route with named start and end points on Monte Navegna, and a trail between two places.
Routes by Theme and Course
The reserve’s long-distance trail network includes the Cammino Naturale dei Parchi, the Cammino di San Benedetto, the Sentiero Italia and the Sentiero Europeo E1. These four routes form part of the reserve’s wider trail network; for detailed planning, the start and end points described for each provide more specific guidance.
The trails of the Ecomuseum of Salto and Turano can also be explored in different ways: on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by car.
Another route is the Ippovia along the shores of Lago del Salto. It is more than 200 kilometres long and passes through Varco Sabino. Its lakeside course and considerably greater overall length set it apart from the more specifically described trails on Monte Navegna.
Districts and Historic Landmarks
Poggio Vittiano is a well-preserved medieval village and a district of Varco Sabino. The Chiesa della B. Vergine Assunta is located there, with origins dating back to the Middle Ages. Rocca Vittiana is another district: perched on a rocky outcrop above Lago del Salto, its narrow lanes and arches form a small, winding cluster of buildings.
Individual buildings also offer insight into the area’s history. The rural church of Sant'Angelo de Varco was first mentioned in 1252 in a register of churches dependent on the monastery of San Salvatore Maggiore. The Church of San Girolamo preserves a bas-relief of a processional cross from the 15th century. The well-preserved Roman Bridge bears witness to the area’s importance as an access route to Abruzzo.
The Ecomuseum’s themed trails offer further cultural points of interest. The Faith Trail includes the Grotta di San Michele di Varco Sabino. Rigatti is listed on the “Itinerario dei Castelli e delle Rocche”; Rigatti Castle was probably founded in the 12th century.
Prioritising Your Interests When Looking for Hotels
When looking for hotels in Varco Sabino, first consider whether you want to focus your trip on the nature reserve’s trails, the Ecomuseum’s routes, or the districts and historic buildings. The places mentioned offer a range of highlights, from trails and mountains to churches, a bridge and cultural routes. This way, you can tailor your search to the themes that matter most to your trip planning.
