Prossedi Between Architectural History and Nature

Prossedi brings together historic buildings, sacred art and trails into nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Prossedi, you can first consider whether the town’s history or a hike with a clearly named destination should shape your stay. The Porta Maggiore leads into the medieval historic centre. For trekking, there is a trail to the Prossedi Plateau; the Grotta degli Ausi is a nearby destination for a nature outing. These different highlights give you a concrete starting point for planning your trip.

Buildings from Different Periods

The present-day structure of the Porta Maggiore was built in 1765 to a design by architect Domenico Schiera. The gate leads into Prossedi’s medieval historic centre. The Porta thus combines a precisely dated architectural history with its role as an entrance to the centre.

The Romanesque church of San Nicola dates from around 1200 and has a limestone portal from the 14th century. The church and portal therefore represent different periods of construction. The church also houses the painting “Maria Santissima Avvocata Nostra”, also known as the “Madonna di Vicovaro”. The building, portal and painting each offer a distinct point of interest if you are interested in the town’s history and art.

La Loggetta is a medieval covered loggia that was once used as a market. This building connects architecture with a former everyday function: the loggia was not just a covered space, but once served as a marketplace. This gives it a different historical significance from San Nicola, where the construction period and sacred art take centre stage.

The Palazzo Baronale, also known as the Palazzo Gabrielli, has four rectangular bastions and a courtyard with a fountain in the centre. The bastions and central fountain are two specific features that help describe the palace’s architecture. The names Palazzo Baronale and Palazzo Gabrielli refer to the same building.

Trail to the Plateau or Route Through the Town

A trail from Prossedi leads to the Prossedi Plateau, making it a trekking option. Prossedi is also on the Via Francigena del Sud. These two details describe different ways to connect the town with a route: the trail to the plateau has an explicitly named destination, while Prossedi’s location on the Via Francigena del Sud describes the town’s connection to that route. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between a hike with the plateau as its destination and the route on which Prossedi is located.

Another nature outing leads to the Grotta degli Ausi, which lies in the countryside a few kilometres from Borgo Prossedi. The cave is the destination of an easy hike. Its natural features include limestone formations of stalactites and stalagmites, a waterfall and a small lake. This outing therefore differs from the trip to the plateau: here, alongside the trail, the geological formations and water inside the cave are also highlights.

Local Tradition and Planning Your Visit

At the Sagra della Zazzicchia, salsiccia prossedana is sampled at the beginning of December. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the event dates before you travel. This lets you take the local culinary tradition into account when planning, without assuming a specific date.

The Porta Maggiore has no architectural barriers. When planning a specific visit, please check the current access conditions.
