If you’re looking for a hotel in Giulianello, you can plan your trip around the themes that define the town: sacred architecture and art, traditional music, historic buildings and Lake Giulianello. The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista combines Baroque design with older forms; there is also a statue with a distinctive history of materials and the small country church of Madonnella. Lake Giulianello is a focus in its own right for nature and route planning. This lets you decide in advance whether a particular feast day, the history of the buildings or the route to the lake will shape your trip.

Church architecture and religious art

The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista is designed in the fully developed Baroque style, yet its floor plan and façade closely follow the model of the 16th century. Its architectural appeal lies in this contrast between Baroque design and an older visual language. The Bambin-Gesù statue is also kept in the church. A devout Franciscan carved it from olive wood from Gethsemane in the 16th century. This adds a specific story about the object to the architecture: the statue’s period, material and connection to Gethsemane are all part of its history. These offer two distinct perspectives for understanding Giulianello’s culture—the form of a church building and the history of a religious work of art.

Other traces of the town’s history

On the outskirts of Giulianello, a small country church dedicated to Madonna della Consolazione was built in 1616; it is known as Madonnella. Cardinal Antonio Maria Salviati played a role in the construction history of today’s historic palazzo in Giulianello: he completed works that included the construction of the palazzo. The town’s history can thus be understood through different themes: the dedication and name of a small church, as well as the works associated with the palazzo.

Lake Giulianello and route planning

Lake Giulianello was declared a natural monument in 2007. The “Visitare Giulianello” route covers 1 km in the town and a further 2.7 km to the lake. These figures distinguish the section within the town from the additional distance to the lake; you can plan for the two sections separately. To reach the lake, take the SP3 from Giulianello towards Velletri; after about 1 km, turn onto an unpaved road. From the barrier, it is another 700 m on foot to the lake. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Traditions and their historical context

The Bambinello tradition is renewed in Giulianello on 6 January. Since 1798, the Bambin-Gesù statue has been carried in procession through the town’s main streets after the 10 a.m. Mass. If you’re planning your trip around this custom, the date and sequence are clear: the 10 a.m. Mass is followed by the procession. Giulianello’s folk songs are more than 1,000 years old and have been passed down from generation to generation; the Donne di Giulianello group has preserved this tradition for more than 40 years. These time references describe different things: 1798 refers to the procession tradition, while the more than 1,000 years refers to the age of the songs and the more than 40 years to the group’s preservation efforts.
