Historic centre at Monte Cairo

Piedimonte San Germano lies at the foot of Monte Cairo. The medieval Castello dei Conti di Aquino stands in the upper historic centre. Its inner grounds, protected by imposing walls, host conferences and events of historical and cultural interest. The Abbey of Montecassino is just a few kilometres away. The castle and abbey are distinct historical landmarks: here, the building in the town centre; there, the nearby monastery.

Churches and pilgrimage traditions

The modern church of Santa Maria Assunta in cielo is in the upper part of town and was built in the 20th century. A document dating from 1003, kept in the Montecassino archives, records the dedication of the chapel of Sant'Amasio to the patron saint of Piedimonte. A pilgrimage in honour of the saint takes place every year on 22 January. During it, worshippers carry the saint’s wooden bust in a procession from Santa Maria Assunta in Piedimonte Superiore; further celebrations follow on 23 January.

The churches in Volla and the chapel in Ruscito also have specific historical dates associated with them. The first archival mention of the church of Sacro Cuore di Maria in Volla dates to 4 December 1850. The chapel of Madonna Addolorata in Ruscito was built in 1919. A religious and civic festival in honour of the Madonna has been held there since that same year; it was suspended during the Second World War. In Ruscito, therefore, the chapel’s construction and the beginning of the festival tradition date to the same year.

Another religious tradition marks the month of August: every year, a procession more than 300 years old sets out from Piedimonte San Germano for the Sanctuary of Madonna del Canneto in Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo. For those interested in festival dates, the annual calendar offers two distinct occasions: the celebrations for Sant'Amasio in January and the procession for Madonna del Canneto in August.

Memorial sites and wartime history

The Hitler Line incorporated Piedimonte San Germano Alta as a fortified stronghold in its defensive position. An obelisk stands on Colle della Memoria, just outside the walls of the medieval castle. It commemorates those who fought for peace and freedom. The Museo della Memoria di Piedimonte San Germano is a multimedia project documenting the city’s wartime experiences. It includes memorial trails, accounts from civilians, memorial sites and panels about the battle. The project was launched in May 2022.

Near the town hall, features of the Gran Percorso della Memoria mark the route. An information sign points to sites open to visitors; a QR code provides information about the city’s wartime history. Along with the obelisk and the museum project, these stops offer different ways to engage with remembrance: through a memorial site, a marked route and documented accounts of the population’s wartime experiences.

Historical links and routes

In the Middle Ages, Piedimonte San Germano was part of the domain of the Abbey of Montecassino. In 1140, the men of Roger II of Sicily temporarily occupied the town; shortly afterwards, it returned to the monastery’s rule. Piedimonte was also a fortified bastion on the strategic route between Rome and Naples. These historical links place the castle and the town’s proximity to Montecassino within a longer history of the area.

A section of the Cammino di San Benedetto also passes through the area: the route from Castrocielo to Piedimonte San Germano forms part of the pilgrimage route’s final stage, which ends at the Abbey of Montecassino. Piedimonte San Germano is also served by the A1 motorway. In planning a trip, religious traditions, medieval history and the memory of war thus come together as distinct themes.
