Discover Alatri: Hotels and History
Accommodation in Alatri
Alatri is defined above all by its Acropolis: its Cyclopean walls dominate the town centre. Alongside them are a museum housed in a 13th-century civic building, medieval religious architecture and works of art from different periods. This range makes a good starting point for a stay focused on culture and history. When looking for a hotel in Alatri, you can first decide whether you want to focus on ancient buildings, museum collections or sacred art.
Acropolis: Walls and Porta Maggiore
Alatri’s Acropolis is dominated by Cyclopean walls dating from the 2nd century BC. The outer route leads to Porta Maggiore and runs along Via Gregoriana. At Pizzo Pizzale, the eastern wall of the Acropolis rises to more than 15 metres. At Porta Maggiore, the monolithic architrave is more than five metres long.
The two measurements describe different parts of the site: the height of the wall at a named point and the length of a single structural element at the gate. On the walk, you can therefore take in both a large section of wall and a striking feature of Porta Maggiore, rather than mistaking the figures as referring to the same architectural dimension.
Buildings and Art from Different Periods
A monumental temple once stood on the Acropolis; today, it is incorporated into the Cathedral of San Paolo. The history of the former temple and the present-day cathedral thus come together at this site. The Chiostro di San Francesco offers a different architectural accent: the 13th-century Franciscan complex comprises a Gothic church, a Renaissance cloister and the fresco Cristo nel Labirinto.
The fresco was discovered in 1996 during work in rooms adjoining the Chiostro di San Francesco. Santa Maria Maggiore is also home to the 13th-century Romanesque wooden group Madonna di Costantinopoli. Polychrome scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary are part of its design. Together, the buildings and works of art offer different ways to explore Alatri’s history: through architecture, a place of worship and individual works of art.
The Museo Civico in Palazzo Gottifredo
The Museo Civico is housed in the historic Palazzo Gottifredo, a 13th-century civic building. It presents archaeological, epigraphic and demoethnoanthropological heritage connected with ancient Aletrium and its surrounding area. The demoethnoanthropological section includes the Collezione Antonio Gambardella, comprising around 1,000 objects.
The difference from the Acropolis is also a difference in perspective: there, walls and buildings define the site; at the Museo Civico, the focus is on several areas of cultural heritage and a named collection. Visitors interested in historic architectural forms will therefore find a different focus in Alatri from those who want to take a closer look at the artefacts on display in the museum.
Sacred Art and Celebrations
The Ostia Incarnata is displayed in a glass case beside the right-hand aisle of the Concattedrale di San Paolo. An annual celebration of the Eucharistic Miracle of the Ostia Incarnata includes a procession of the relic on Alatri’s Acropolis. In 2026, the celebration took place on 13 March.
At Santa Maria Maggiore, the Madonna di Costantinopoli draws attention to a different form of sacred art: a Romanesque wooden group with polychrome scenes. The artworks thus differ both in material and in how they are presented: the Ostia Incarnata is displayed in a glass case, while the Madonna takes the form of a wooden group. These specific differences can help you plan your visits according to your interest in religious history and art.
Routes and Practical Information
The CAI Alatri trail network includes more than 36 marked hiking trails. As the list of routes may change, check the latest overview before planning. Independently of this, Badia San Sebastiano is another historic landmark: it was founded at the beginning of the 6th century and is a stop on the Via Benedicti.
The Museo Diffuso di Alatri is accessible by car, train and bus. It offers accessible routes, tactile signage, Braille and audio QR codes. This information relates to the Museo Diffuso; it combines details on how to get there with specific orientation options on site.
