Prepotto can be explored through several specific themes: the Schioppettino grape variety, routes through a wine-growing landscape, and buildings bearing traces of different periods in history. When planning your stay, you can decide whether wine, nature or history should be your main focus.

Wine and Schioppettino

Schioppettino di Prepotto e Cialla is an indigenous red grape variety that is held in particular esteem in Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is also considered the characteristic variety of the subzone of the same name within the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC. According to tradition, Schioppettino originated among the historic buildings, farmsteads and vineyards of Prepotto.

There are also specific places to visit for wine tastings. Vigna Lenuzza is located at Via Brolo 51 in Prepotto; check the address before setting out. The tasting room has a capacity of 15 people. As this may change, confirm the capacity when planning your visit.

The Judrio Valley and Routes

The Judrio Valley runs through Prepotto and is known for its diverse flora and fauna. Its natural landscape is constantly changing. Wine-growing also shapes the small valley of the Judrio between Prepotto and Dolegna del Collio: the Anello dello Schioppettino trail passes through this landscape, by wineries, farms, small churches and villages. The route therefore brings together different aspects of the cultural landscape rather than showcasing just one type of scenery.

The Anello follows quiet roads and can be walked or cycled year-round. During the grape harvest, watch out for farm vehicles. This is especially important if you plan your visit during the harvest; the route is still described as an option that can be used throughout the year.

The Via delle antiche Pievi di Prepotto offers a different focus. In the municipality, it connects four old votive churches with the Santuario di Castelmonte: San Pietro Apostolo in San Pietro di Chiazzacco, Santi Pietro e Paolo in Centa, San Nicola Vescovo in Cladrecis, and the Church of the Tre Re Magi in Prepotischis. The route starts at the scuola dell'infanzia at Via Brolo 39 in Prepotto and ends at the Santuario di Castelmonte. Check the start and end points before setting out.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The village and vineyard circular route passes churches dating from different centuries. Santa Giustina dates from the 8th century, while the Chapel of San Giacomo dates from the 16th century. The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Borgo Centa dates back to the 13th century. Taken together, these dates offer an overview of different historical building periods without suggesting that the churches all belong to the same era.

Borgo Centa is a settlement in the municipality of Prepotto. Some of its houses have medieval origins; the settlement grew around the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo. The natural terrain provides protection on the valley side, while a large stone wall offers protection on the uphill side. The settlement's location is therefore part of its architectural description: the natural terrain and the wall form two different sides of its defenses.

Castello di Albana is another example of Prepotto's architectural history. It was built to defend the Judrio Valley and was first mentioned in 1161 as “in villa qui dicitur Albana.” After being destroyed and rebuilt several times, it took on its present form as a fortified house; it was damaged during the Second World War. Its architectural features include a rectangular central keep, four corner towers and an enclosing wall. These elements define a clearly structured complex, while its history is marked by repeated destruction and rebuilding.

If you are looking for a hotel in Prepotto, wine, routes or historic buildings can each serve as a different focus when choosing where to stay. First consider which of these aspects of the area you would like to include in your travel plans.
