Discover Pocenia: villas, churches and nature
Accommodation in Pocenia
Pocenia can be explored through several distinct themes: villas with parkland, churches in different hamlets, archaeological traces and the Parco Comunale dei Fiumi Stella e Torsa. If you are looking for a hotel in Pocenia, these highlights can help structure your travel plans: architecture and local history sit alongside a distinctive nature theme. This means the town cannot be reduced to a single attraction; the following stops each offer a different perspective.
Villas and parkland
Villa Caratti Fraccaroli brings together a manor house, a barchessa (farm outbuilding) and a large park with hills, ditches and a pond. The buildings and various park features together shape the character of the estate. Villa Sbroiavacca Michieli Fantin offers a different architectural perspective: it is located near the centre of Pocenia on Via dello Stella–SP43 and not far from the A4 motorway. Its main building dates from 1800; it is a linear, three-storey structure with a park. The differences are specific: at Villa Caratti Fraccaroli, the focus is on the manor house, barchessa and the forms of the park, while Villa Sbroiavacca Michieli Fantin is also defined by its date of construction, linear layout and number of storeys. Those who put historic architecture at the centre of their visit will find two distinct examples, differing in their building forms and outdoor spaces.
Churches and local history
The churches connect different locations with different periods in time. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata is in the rural hamlet of Paradiso di Pocenia; it can be reached via Via Crosaris or Strada Provinciale 87. The Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Rosario in Roveredo retains its original 13th-century floor plan and has a semicircular apse. The floor plan and apse offer two specific clues to this church’s architectural form. In the town centre stand the Church of San Nicolò Vescovo and its bell tower. The medieval Centa is believed to have surrounded the site where the church and its bell tower now stand. The church-related landmarks therefore range from a preserved 13th-century floor plan to a presumed medieval enclosure in the present-day town centre.
Roman traces and the Stella
At Stroppagallo, remains point to a Roman road that connected Aquileia and Cividale via Pocenia. Coins dating from the time of Augustus and several amphorae were found along this presumed road. The finds are therefore connected with the same presumed route. Another historical thread begins at the Stella: Pocenia’s first settlement developed as a fishing village on its banks. The Roman route and its finds, and the fishing settlement on the Stella, tell different chapters of the past: one a presumed link between cities, the other the origins of a settlement on a riverbank. In this way, the archaeological traces at Stroppagallo and the early history of the town intersect in different ways.
Nature in the Parco Comunale
The Parco Comunale dei Fiumi Stella e Torsa offers a distinct natural perspective. Part of the park is included in the Natura 2000 protected area ZSC IT3320026 Risorgive dello Stella. Around 200 bird species have been recorded in the park. These are two different aspects: its partial inclusion in a protected area and the approximate number of bird species recorded there. If you would like to include nature alongside architecture and local history in your travel plans, the municipal park offers a distinct theme to explore.
