When planning a stay in Mione, you can weigh local history against trails as different areas of focus. The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate and Palazzo Micoli Toscano offer points of interest in architectural and art history; several described routes provide practical guidance for hikes. This makes it possible to assess the destination according to whether you are more interested in historical details, a longer hike, or a route along the valley floor.

Church and Palazzo: Different Historical Periods

The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate is associated with several features that can be dated. It was first mentioned in a document dated July 26, 1382. Its choir dates from the 14th century and was frescoed by Pietro Fuluto in the 16th century. The pointed-arch openings and the clock face with Roman numerals stand out as distinctive architectural details on the bell tower. These dates and features provide different points of reference if you would like to consider architectural history and artistic design separately.

The attribution of the altarpiece also has a specific historical reference: a contract dated February 4, 1538, helped attribute the work to Simone di Paolo. Together with the church’s earlier mention, the choir, and the frescoes, this creates a timeline from the Middle Ages to the 16th century.

Palazzo Micoli Toscano was commissioned in 1836 by the brothers Giovanni Angiolo and Giovanni Francesco Micoli Toscano. That same year, it was designed by the architect Giovanni Battista Bassi, who was from Pordenone. The building was intended to highlight the family’s social standing and provide a full view across the Ovaro valley.

The Stalon, a rustic building dating from the 17th century, is part of the Palazzo’s architectural setting. It originally served as a carriage house and stable. The two buildings thus differ both in when they were built and in their original function: the Stalon was a service building, while the Palazzo was commissioned in 1836.

Hiking Trails with Different Planning Details

Hiking trail No. 220 starts in Mione at 710 m and leads via Passo della Forcella and Casera Losa to Lateis at 1,274 m. The route is listed as 14 km long, with an elevation gain of 1,260 m and a stated hiking time of 5 hours and 30 minutes. These specific figures help you estimate the time required and consider the route as a longer part of your plans.

Another route is the valley-floor trail “Ovasta–Mione–Pieve di S. Maria di Gorto.” The municipal brochure for the 2025 season describes it as easy to walk, recently restored, and signposted; it states that it is open for walking from July. Since this information refers to the 2025 season, check trail conditions locally before setting out. For this route, the focus is on its classification as a valley-floor trail, whereas trail No. 220 is listed with its length, elevation gain, and hiking time.

The “Pesariis–Prato Carnico–Mione–Ovaro” route can also be identified by specific trail features: it heads southeast, passing close to the church, then leaves Via Mione and continues straight along a path. This description distinguishes the route by its course from the two trails for which other planning details are given. Check trail conditions before setting out.

A Date-Specific Tradition

In Ovaro, in the hamlet of Mione, the “Lancio delle cidulas” is associated with January 17. If this date matters to your travel plans, ask about the local program in advance. This lets you take the tradition’s timing into account without assuming that an event will take place on a particular travel date.

Mione therefore offers different starting points for choosing your focus: historical details at the church and Palazzo, a hike with stated route figures, or trails described by their route or their classification as valley-floor trails.
