Discover Ovaro
Accommodation in Ovaro
Ovaro offers visitors cultural points of interest ranging from church history to regional production. The mountain groups of Col Gentile to the west and Arvenis to the east give the town a clearly defined landscape. The Pieve, collections, architectural history, crafts and the traditional market each offer a distinct focus.
Church history and early evidence
The Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto lies between the hamlets of Agrons and Cella. It is an ancient Carnic baptistery church, situated on the Cammino delle Pievi and one of the oldest buildings in Friuli. It is therefore a tangible building between two hamlets, a testament to religious history and part of the Cammino. Those interested in church and architectural history will find a different focus here than in archaeological collections or regional crafts.
The Museo della Pieve di Gorto is housed in the former village dairy in Cella. It displays Late Antique and Lombard finds, as well as stone fragments from Lombard-Frankish places of worship. The focus here is not only on buildings, but also on objects and fragments from different periods. The museum thus complements the history of the Pieve with archaeological evidence and material culture.
In the hamlet of San Martino in Ovaro, the remains of an early Christian basilica and an early medieval necropolis form part of the archaeological heritage. The two sites differ in form and date: one is the remains of a basilica, the other a necropolis. San Martino thus complements the history of church architecture with its own archaeological focus.
Architectural history and regional production
Palazzo Micoli Toscano in Mione was built in 1836. The building that houses the Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana dates from 1755. These dates refer to the buildings themselves. The exhibition “Planelas e Scugjelas” offers a different perspective: it documents the work and products of the oven businesses in Alta Carnia. Architectural history and the history of regional production thus stand side by side as distinct themes.
Green-painted roof tiles, characteristic of many traditional houses in the Carnia valleys, are made in Cella. This craft adds a specific material detail to the themes of buildings and production. If you are interested in architecture, it offers a distinct perspective on a regionally characteristic product alongside the buildings with their recorded dates.
Market and group tours
The Sagra del Malgaro traditionally takes place in July. It includes a market featuring typical food and craft products.
Guided tours of the Mine of Cludinico are available for groups by prior booking. This booking requirement is part of planning your visit. Ovaro therefore offers a choice of different cultural themes: religious and archaeological heritage, architectural and industrial history, crafts, or a market in July.
