Discover Campoformido
Accommodation in Campoformido
Campoformido brings together several distinct themes: the history of peace, rural building traditions, church art, and designated natural areas. You can consider these aspects separately when planning your trip—from historic buildings and places of remembrance to named natural areas and offerings related to Parco del Cormôr.
Townscape and natural areas
The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purificazione is located in Campoformido. Natural areas also have specific names and sizes: the Magredi di San Canciano biotope in Campoformido covers 43.34 hectares. The Magredi di Campoformido area, designated as a Zona Speciale di Conservazione, covers 242 hectares. The different designations and area figures provide two specific points of reference for the town’s natural features.
The settlement developed as an agricultural community along Via Principe di Piemonte. Architectural and structural elements characteristic of the rural building types of the Friulian plain can be found there. This connection with agriculture is therefore reflected not only in the historic settlement but also in the named building styles.
History of peace and building traditions
A copy of the Peace Statue, originally intended for Campoformido, stands in the town’s central square. The monument’s history is thus part of the townscape, as is its present-day form as a copy.
Campoformido’s name is linked to a specific historic event through the Casa del Trattato, formerly Casa Del Torre: on 17 October 1797, the Treaty of Campoformio was signed there between Napoleon and the Austrians. The Casa is probably a late 16th-century building that has survived to the present day after several alterations. Above the commemorative plaque is a devotional fresco of the Madonna and Child.
The Chiesetta di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria was adorned with remarkable frescoes in the 13th century, some of which can still be seen today. Archaeological excavations there uncovered the burials of two members of the local medieval nobility. The frescoes and burials offer different insights into the history of this chapel: its painted decoration and its archaeological remains.
Another historic structure is the medieval enclosure known as Centa di Campoformido. Sections of the masonry are still visible on its north and south sides.
Event and visitor centre
The annual event “Un giorno con Napoleone” brings the atmosphere of the era of the Treaty of Campoformio back to life. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.
The Mulino di Basaldella, also known as Mulino del Ronco, operated from 1300 to 1982. Today, the mill serves as the visitor centre for Parco del CormĂ´r di Campoformido. This highlights both its former function as a mill and its current role in connection with the park.
Visits and educational workshops for schools and families are organised there for groups. These activities can be combined with activities focused on the Magredi grasslands or excursions in Parco del CormĂ´r. If you are interested in these offerings, the natural themes mentioned above can help you decide what to focus on during your visit.
