Valeriano: Cultural History and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Valeriano
Valeriano brings together local history, art, wine tradition, and cycling as different themes for a stay. The medieval fortified complex of Centa di Valeriano and the church of Santa Maria dei Battuti represent history and art; Cantina Bulfon is dedicated to old local grape varieties. The FVG 3 cycling route from Pinzano to Casarsa adds another option. If you are looking for a hotel in Valeriano, you can weigh these attractions against one another: Would you like to connect your stay primarily with historic sites, wine, or a cycling stage?
Centa and the Church of Santa Maria dei Battuti
The medieval fortified complex of Centa di Valeriano stands on a hill near the town center. In 1309, Enrico di Prampero and Odorico di Cuccagna destroyed the complex during the conquest and plundering of the town.
Before 1300, the Confraternity of the Battuti of Valeriano built the church of Santa Maria dei Battuti. The stone portal was created by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte; its archivolt bears the year 1499 as well as the date May 15. An archivolt is the arched upper part of a portal. The church contains a signed fresco triptych by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis, known as Il Pordenone, dated 1506. It depicts Saint Valerian, Saint Michael, and John the Baptist. A triptych is a three-part work of art. The portal and fresco offer two points of reference for the church’s chronology: their dates, 1499 and 1506, are seven years apart.
The Wine Tradition of Cantina Bulfon
Cantina Bulfon in Valeriano is dedicated to rediscovering several old local grape varieties from Friuli. The rediscovered varieties were added to the National Register of Italian Grape Varieties in 1992. This provides two distinct points of reference: the rediscovery of the old varieties and their addition to the register in 1992.
The winery includes a modern cellar, a sales area, a large tasting room, and an ethnographic collection. In addition to wine production, ethnography is another distinct part of the winery. The winery invites wine tourists to visit its vineyards and cellar and taste local wines. Check the visiting arrangements in advance if you plan to visit.
Getting Your Bearings and the Cycling Route
The Mulino di Ampiano is just outside Valeriano, in the direction of Lestans. This differs from the location of Centa, which stands on a hill near the town center. These offer two distinct points of reference for getting your bearings: a location outside town in the direction of Lestans, and an elevated position near the center.
On the FVG 3 cycling route from Pinzano to Casarsa, a sign points to the entrance to Valeriano after one kilometer. The route description dated January 9, 2024, identifies the FVG 3 as a one-way route and recommends using the train. The entrance after one kilometer locates Valeriano along the route; the one-way direction and train use, by contrast, are relevant to planning your journey. As route infrastructure and train availability can change, check the current route and train connections before setting out.
