Cavasso Nuovo lies at the foot of the Carnic Prealps, between the Colvera and Meduna valleys. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cavasso Nuovo, you can get to know the town through its different highlights: trails and landscapes, migration history, church architecture or local food. The following topics offer concrete ideas to help you shape your stay around your own interests.

Trails around Cavasso Nuovo

The circular route around Cavasso Nuovo is about 10 km long and starts at Piazza Plebiscito. It can be divided into an urban route and a rural route; both start and end at the railway station. This lets you choose between the two routes when planning. Fonte Recoaro is another destination: it is in Cavasso Nuovo and provides mineral water containing hydrogen sulfide. From the car park in Piazza Emanuele II, behind the parish church of San Remigio, a short unpaved path and a footbridge lead to the spring.

The ruins of Castello di Mizza are also linked to the town’s history. They are associated with traces of settlements from prehistoric and Roman times. From Cavasso Nuovo, the route follows the paved road to Casali Grilli, then continues on foot for about 30 minutes to the ruins. As local conditions can change, check trail conditions before setting out.

For a bike ride, consider the Maniago–Cavasso Nuovo route. It is part of the wider Pedemontana FVG3 cycle route and is well signposted. The route is suitable for families with children aged six and over. The options described therefore differ both in how you get around and in the stated distance: the circular route is about 10 km, while a walking time of around 30 minutes is given for the path to the castle.

Migration history and the museum

Since 2000, the Museo dell'Emigrazione has been housed in the Palazat and occupies its entire second floor. Its collection comprises about 1,000 objects, around 400 of which are displayed in twelve thematic sections. The “Lavoro ed emigrazione” section explores, through photographs, objects and documents, the migration movements and destinations of workers from western Friuli.

The occupations covered include mosaicists and terrazzo workers. Migration also carried their craft skills abroad. Graphic works and documents from the Scuola di Disegno di Cavasso, which was active from the 1920s to the 1950s, are also on permanent display. The exhibition thus connects the history of labour migration with specific occupations and the local drawing school.

Palazat, churches and local traditions

The Palazat, the palace of the Counts of Polcenigo-Fanna, was built between 1562 and 1594. Its architectural features include corner towers and extensive rustication framing the portals and windows. The museum occupies an entire floor of this historic building.

The parish church of San Remigio was built in the 16th century and extensively restored in the 18th century. The Church of San Leonardo in Orgnese dates back to 1544. It has a portico with flattened arches, and its bell tower was built in 1897. Cavasso Nuovo’s patron saint’s celebration in honour of San Remigio takes place annually on 1 October; the detailed programme may vary.

The Mulino Ciat in Borgo Grava is another of Cavasso Nuovo’s distinctive sights. A local specialty is the Cipolla di Cavasso e della Val Cosa, a Slow Food Presidium of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The onions are harvested in August and stored in braids throughout the year.

Practical information for getting around town

The municipal tourist map includes trails, facilities and useful information for visitors. The Biblioteca Civica “Caterina e Angelo Tramontin” offers free book consultation and borrowing services. The “Lavoro ed emigrazione” section of the Museo della Vita Contadina “Diogene Penzi” is located at Piazza Plebiscito 12, 33092 Cavasso Nuovo. These points of reference complement visits to the churches, museum and trails with practical places to go in town.
