Discover Maniago: Museums, Cathedral and Monte Jouf
Accommodation in Maniago
Maniago brings together the history of metalworking, architectural heritage and activities on the slopes of Monte Jouf. If you are looking for a hotel in Maniago, you might first consider whether you want to focus your stay on collections and architecture, outdoor activities or regional themes. The town’s places and attractions offer different points of interest and give you practical ideas for planning your trip.
Metalworking and collections
The Museo dell’Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie links local metalworking with an extensive collection. It comprises around 10,000 tangible and intangible historical and scientific objects and is owned by the municipality of Maniago. The exhibition route traces the development of metalworking in Maniago: from the first water-powered forges along the canal, diverted from the Cólvera stream in 1453, to today’s industry and metalworking.
The museum’s location is also part of its history. It is housed in the former large industrial complex of Co.Ri.Ca.Ma. (Coltellerie Riunite di Caslino e Maniago), which began operating in 1907. The collection, exhibition theme and former industrial site offer different perspectives on the local connection to metalworking: through the preserved objects, the development of metalworking and the former industrial site.
Another collection is devoted to bicycles. Ruote al Lavoro displays more than 150 bicycles from the 19th and 20th centuries in a former knife forge. Visits require advance contact. This makes it possible to plan a museum visit as part of your trip.
Architecture and the history of the castle
Dedicated to the martyr Saint Mauro, the Duomo di San Mauro was built in 1488. It is a late Gothic example of Friulian architecture. Its dedication, year of construction and style offer different ways to appreciate the building: through its religious significance as well as its historical and architectural context.
The Centro Visite del Castello di Maniago is a multifunctional space for educational, cultural and tourism activities. These aim to share, enhance and promote the history of the castle and the surrounding area. The centre therefore offers a thematic introduction to the history of Maniago that goes beyond individual buildings to include the wider area.
Walks and activities on Monte Jouf
A walk of about ten minutes from the centre of Maniago leads to the ruins of Castello di Maniago on Colle di San Giacomo. This specific route connects a starting point in the centre with a destination on the hill. It can be enjoyed as a walk in its own right, while Monte Jouf offers a broader range of activities.
On the slopes of Monte Jouf, you can go mountain biking, trekking, downhill riding, Nordic walking and trail running. These activities include cycling as well as different forms of walking and running. As part of the “Curati con Stile” project, 29 different routes to the summit have been designated. Alongside the general choice of activities, you therefore have a specific number of marked summit routes and their destination to help guide you.
Another historical reference is the expression “Par Crous”. In Andreis, Barcis and Maniago, it refers to walking the ancient mule track over Forcella La Croce. This mule track connected Valcellina with the Maniago plain. The term thus links several places and a historic route through the landscape; it refers to walking the route, not to the route itself.
Getting here and regional connections
Maniago can be reached every day using the Treno+Bici service on the Sacile–Maniago railway line. For a trip that includes cycling, this is a practical travel option. Pitina also offers a regional connection: Maniago is one of the mountain municipalities authorised to produce it.
Treno+Bici offers another option for travelling with a bicycle. Choose Maniago based on the themes that matter most to you during your stay.
