Discover Barcis: Lake, Gorge and Nature
Accommodation in Barcis
Barcis combines Lake Barcis with the natural surroundings of the Forra del Cellina. When planning a stay, you can choose from several focuses: water sports on the lake, scenic trails, structures above the gorge, and a nature reserve with a visitor center. The history of local architecture and a local sausage specialty round out the nature and activity themes. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider which aspects of Barcis you want to shape your time there; when choosing, compare the specific details of each offer.
Natural surroundings and visitor center
The Forra del Cellina Nature Reserve also includes areas in Barcis. The reserve’s visitor center is in the hamlet of Ponte Antoi, where you’ll find a themed exhibition about the nature reserve. Opening hours vary by season. Check the current schedule before your visit if you plan to stop at the center.
Water sports and trails at Lake Barcis
Visitors can sail, windsurf, canoe and kayak on Lake Barcis. Activities and conditions may vary depending on the season and operator; check in advance what applies to your planned activity. Several scenic trails circle the lake, and there are also picnic areas. The options differ: on the water, the focus is on water sports; on land, it’s on trails and places to take a break. You can tailor your stay accordingly, focusing more on activities on the lake or on the trails and picnic areas.
Gorge, views and tunnel
The Skywalk del Dint is a walkway suspended above the Forra del Cellina. It can be reached via the Sentiero del Dint. The trail leads to a third viewpoint with a steel structure. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the pre-Alpine valley system of Andreis and Barcis, as well as the gorge.
The Tibetan bridge across the Forra del Cellina is suspended 55 meters above the gorge and offers views of the gorge and the stream’s emerald-green waters. The 55 meters refer to its height above the gorge, not the length of the bridge. The bridge’s position above the gorge is therefore a point of orientation in its own right; at the third viewpoint, the focus is on the 360-degree view of the valley system and the gorge.
The tunnel on the Vecchia Strada della Valcellina was closed in 1992 and is now reserved for cyclists and pedestrians. Check the current access rules before your visit. This section therefore differs from the viewing structures when it comes to planning: for the tunnel, it’s particularly important to know who is allowed to use it.
Architectural history and a local specialty
Palazzo Centi stands by Lake Barcis. The building dates from the 16th century, has an impressive double loggia and is now equipped as a hotel. Its historical date, architectural feature and present-day hotel use come together in this named building.
Petuccia is a sausage made from sheep meat and patented in the valley. It adds a culinary point of interest to the nature and architecture themes, offering another aspect of the valley to consider when planning your stay.
