Discover Aviano: History, Culture and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Aviano
When looking for a hotel in Aviano, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay. Historical themes range from a medieval fortification to church frescoes and a villa with a park; cycling routes and the landscape of Piancavallo offer a different perspective. Consider whether architectural and art history or routes and nature are especially important to your trip. The key details below will help you weigh up these interests.
Castle, frescoes and fortification architecture
Castello di Aviano dates back to the first half of the 10th century. In 967, Emperor Otto I of Saxony gave the castle to the Patriarch of Aquileia. Despite centuries of attacks, destruction and rebuilding, the original structure of an imposing fortification can still be discerned. The dates and the surviving ground plan provide two different points of reference: the first half of the 10th century marks its origins, while its later history was shaped by repeated changes.
The history of art can also be explored through specific dates. The style of Gianfrancesco is especially evident in a cycle of frescoes in the Church of San Gregorio in Castello d’Aviano; the frescoes are dated to 1496. The Pieve di S. Giuliana in Aviano contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. At Cente di Marsure, the San Lorenzo fortification is still clearly visible. Its double ring wall is made of roughly hewn stones laid horizontally in irregular courses. Alongside the history of these structures, their different designs also come into view: the frescoes bring colour and style to the fore, while the ring wall is defined by its construction and stonework.
Villa Policreti and industrial archaeology
Two different periods come together at Villa Policreti. The oldest central section dates to 1565; the romantic park was laid out in the 19th century. Its features include a spacious lawn, the Grotto of Venus, a green clearing and a pond. The distinction in dates between the older part of the building and the later park helps you understand the estate as more than a single phase of construction.
The former Giais hydroelectric power station in Aviano offers a different historical perspective. Built around the turn of the 20th century, it is an important example of industrial archaeology. Unlike the castle and villa, the focus here is not on fortification or park architecture, but on industrial heritage. This lets you distinguish between medieval, early modern and industrial history themes when planning your trip.
Cycling routes and the landscape of Piancavallo
Two routes offer cyclists different points of reference. The route from Aviano to Budoia runs almost entirely along Ciclovia FVG 3, also known as Ciclovia Pedemontana e del Collio. The Salita del Giro d’Italia Aviano–Piancavallo (P002) follows Marco Pantani’s iconic climb at the 1998 Giro d’Italia. It starts on the outskirts of Aviano and leads to Piancavallo. When choosing a route, you can therefore use the stated endpoints as a guide: one route connects Aviano and Budoia along the named Ciclovia, while the other follows the historic Giro climb to Piancavallo. Check current route conditions before cycling.
Piancavallo offers trails for trekking and mountain biking. On sunny days, the view from the highest peaks reaches as far as the Adriatic Sea; the surrounding landscape is typically Dolomitic. Visibility therefore also depends on the weather. Piancavallo is also served by public bus routes. If you are relying on the bus for your journey or planning, check the timetables before you travel.
First decide which of these perspectives you want to shape your stay, then look for a hotel in Aviano.
