Torriana combines medieval heritage with a striking location above the Marecchia Valley. Different interests come together as you plan your trip: the old Borgo, historic fortifications, a designated natural area and routes for outdoor activities. These places do not all tell the same story; comparing their locations, building histories and defining features can help you decide which aspects of Torriana best suit your interests.

Landscape and Natural Area

The old medieval Borgo di Scorticata overlooks the Marecchia Valley. Because of its elevated views across the valley, the Borgo is known as the “Balcony of Romagna.” Castello di Montebello offers a different geographic perspective: it stands at an elevation of 436 metres and overlooks both the lower Marecchia Valley and the Uso Valley. At Scorticata, the view across the Marecchia Valley takes centre stage; at the Castello, a specific elevation and two valleys in view add to the picture. This allows you to distinguish between the two viewpoints rather than treating them as the same landscape experience.

The Natura 2000 site IT4090002 covers the hills and cliffs of Torriana and Montebello. It includes 22 habitats of Community interest, seven of which are priority habitats. A regional resolution in 2024 expanded the area. The natural area is therefore shaped not only by its visible hills and cliffs but also by its diverse habitats. The second section of the Oasi Montebello Nature Observatory focuses on the valley’s geological and geomorphological features, as well as the relationship between people and their habitat. This focus complements the landscape by drawing attention to its landforms and the connection between people and their environment.

Borgo, Rocca and Castello

The Rocca di Torriana was a medieval fortress built to guard the ancient Via Maior. The road ran up the Valmarecchia and formed an important link to Montefeltro and Tuscany. The Rocca is therefore also connected to a historic transport route. The surviving features of the structure include the keep, an entrance flanked by two imposing round towers, the arch above it and a cistern. Its history can be explored both through its role along the Via Maior and through specific parts of the fortification.

Castello di Montebello was built around the year 1000 on the foundations of a Roman tower dating from the 3rd century BC. Its building history thus links a Roman predecessor with the construction of the Castello roughly a millennium later. The daytime tour covers every room in the manor house and showcases furnishings dating from the 14th to the 19th century. Here, you can encounter both architectural history and furnishings from different periods. Since tour times may change, check the current schedule before your visit.

Cultural Activities and Routes

The Museo Vivente della Tessitura offers beginner courses and educational activities in collaboration with schools in the region. For travellers interested in textile crafts as well as castles and fortresses, it provides a distinct cultural focus. Its activities combine an introduction for beginners with educational work rooted in the local region.

Between Torriana and Montebello, there is a well-maintained, well-signposted network of routes for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. Outdoor activities thus complement the themes of history and architecture; at the same time, the range of activities listed distinguishes the network from a hiking-only route. If you are planning a specific trip, check the latest route information.

Torriana is also associated with a historic and renowned honey production. This connection adds a local tradition to the picture of the area, alongside its fortification history, culture and natural environment.
