Discover Canossa’s History and Geology
Accommodation in Canossa
Canossa offers travelers several ways to explore the area: the events at Castello di Canossa, the geology of Rupe di Campotrera, trails focused on natural history or local history, and the cultural site of Votigno di Canossa. You can choose a destination based on the interests you want to shape your trip.
Nature Reserve and Geology
Riserva Naturale Rupe di Campotrera covers 42 hectares in Canossa. It is part of the “Rupe di Campotrera-Rossena” SIC site and the protected natural landscape of Colline Reggiane-Terre di Matilde.
Rupe di Campotrera features rare datolite crystal formations and pillow lavas. The latter formed when lava cooled rapidly in seawater. Two distinct geological features are therefore at the heart of this area: rare crystal formations and rock formations whose origins are linked to the contact between lava and seawater.
Castles, Tower and History
In 1077, during the Investiture Controversy, the historic meeting between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII took place at Castello di Canossa. Henry IV humbled himself before the pope so that his excommunication would be lifted. The clearly specified year and occasion give Castello di Canossa a special place among Canossa’s historical highlights.
Castello di Rossena rises atop a steep ophiolite cliff. Some frescoed walls have been preserved there. Torre di Rossenella is located within Riserva Naturale Rupe di Campotrera and dates back to the 12th century. From the lower parking area, it is about a five-minute walk to the tower. Local conditions may change; check before your visit.
Trails with Different Focuses
Sentiero geologico del Rio della Fornace is an easy, waymarked trail. Along the route, you can discover geological and ecological features of the protected area. Its focus is therefore on the natural features of this protected landscape.
Sentiero dei Ducati is a 201-kilometer trail from Reggio Emilia to the Ligurian Sea. Its second stage passes through the heart of the Reggio hills and the Matildic castles, including Castello di Bianello and Castello di Canossa. It runs through quiet valleys and medieval villages and ends in Votigno di Canossa. This stage is part of a long-distance route; by contrast, Sentiero geologico focuses on the geological and ecological features of the protected area.
Culture and a Local Specialty
Casa del Tibet di Votigno is an international cultural center. It was founded in March 1990, under the patronage of the Dalai Lama, in a medieval village in Canossa. This cultural site complements the destination’s historical and natural-history highlights.
Acetaia comunale Rupe di Canossa offers guided historical and sensory tours about traditional Reggio Emilia PGI balsamic vinegar. If you plan to include this in your itinerary, check the booking arrangements before your trip.
