The history of the prehistoric settlement near Carpineti, on Monte Valestra near the Oratorio di San Michele, reaches even further back. The settlement is dated to the Middle to Late Bronze Age, from the 9th to the 8th century BC, as well as the Iron Age of the 7th century BC. These periods give the historical perspective a different scale from the medieval evidence found at the castle and church.

Putting trails and elevation gain into perspective

The signposted Sentiero Matilde leads to the panoramic summit of Monte Antognano and the Castello delle Carpinete. For the sixth stage of the Via Matildica del Volto Santo, the climb from Carpineti to the castle is listed as less than two kilometres, with an elevation gain of 200 metres. These figures refer to the climb on this stage; both the distance and elevation gain are relevant for planning. Route conditions can change, so check them before setting out on a hike.

The fair, food and programme

The Fiera di San Vitale di Carpineti has medieval origins and began as a market for goods and livestock. The 2026 edition lists traditional dishes, musical performances and activities for children. The Scarpazzone montanaro takes centre stage; programme details may vary from one edition to another.

The culinary distinction is also specific: Scarpazzone montanaro contains rice, unlike the lowland Erbazzone. If you are interested in the fair’s food, this difference gives you a clear point of comparison between the two dishes without conflating them.

Road connections for getting there

Carpineti is connected to the plain via the Fondovalle Tresinaro SP 98, the SS 63 and the Fondovalle Secchia. The Fondovalle Tresinaro SP 98 leads to Reggio Emilia in 35 minutes; the Fondovalle Secchia connects the municipality with the ceramics district around Sassuolo and Modena.
