Faenza offers a range of cultural themes to explore during your stay: the history of maiolica, Renaissance art and architectural history, as well as natural habitats and a cycling route through varied landscapes. These themes span different historical periods, each with its own focus. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus primarily on ceramics, architecture, art or nature.

Ceramics and the history of faience

Maiolica from Faenza gave the European term “faïence” its name in the early 17th century. The connection between the city and ceramics thus extends into European word history. At Spazio Ceramica Faenza, more than 30 ceramic artists can present their creations together in a space in the heart of the city. If you are planning your visit specifically around this joint exhibition, check in advance whether it is still being offered, as this visitor and exhibition arrangement may change.

Medieval city history in Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo took shape in the Middle Ages. The 12th-century Palazzo del Podestà and the 13th-century Palazzo del Popolo face each other and enclose the square. Their different construction dates give the square’s history a clear sequence: two successive centuries can be read in the two palaces. At the same time, it is their opposing positions that define the square as an urban ensemble. Faenza’s medieval development can thus be linked to more than just a single building.

Renaissance art and architectural history

The Cattedrale di San Pietro houses Renaissance artworks in sixteen side chapels. The church’s building history also has several layers: the Renaissance church was built on the site of an earlier structure and is part of an architectural and urban renewal initiated by Carlo II Manfredi. The Medici family sent the Florentine architect Giuliano da Maiano to Faenza. The artworks, earlier structure and urban renewal thus mark different aspects of the Cattedrale’s history without reducing it to a single building phase.

A different historical perspective: the Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca Comunale di Faenza is the city’s oldest museum institution and was founded in 1797. This founding year provides a distinct point of reference alongside the medieval palaces and the Renaissance history of the Cattedrale. When considering Faenza’s cultural history, different kinds of historical reference points can be viewed side by side here: construction dates, artworks in the side chapels and the history of a museum institution. They belong to different chapters in the city’s cultural profile.

Natural habitats and landscapes

The botanical garden of the Malmerendi Museum of Natural Sciences gives visitors insight into local natural habitats, with a range that extends from the Adriatic coast to the Apennines. The focus here is on habitats and natural history rather than the city’s architectural and artistic history. The Torre di Oriolo dei Fichi offers another perspective on the landscape: it was part of the Manfredi defence system of Faenza facing Forlì. Its viewing terrace overlooks the surrounding landscape; on clear days, the view extends as far as the sea.

A cycling route to the Riviera Romagnola

The Ciclovia del Canale Naviglio Zanelli connects Faenza with the Riviera Romagnola and passes through parks, villages and nature reserves. Unlike the named buildings and cultural institutions, this route structures an outing around a course and its changing landscapes. If you include it in your cycling plans, check local conditions before setting off.

When planning your stay, it is helpful to distinguish between the themes: the piazza, palaces, Cattedrale and Pinacoteca represent different aspects of cultural and city history; the botanical garden and cycling route turn the focus to nature and landscapes. This lets you choose your own focus rather than combining different experiences into a single theme.
