Ziano Piacentino offers opportunities for a stay focused on wine, trails and architectural history. For planning your trip, different ways of exploring the area can be helpful: an annual wine festival, a two-day cycling tour and several historic sites. This lets you decide whether a specific event date, outdoor activity, or architectural and art history is most important to you.

Wine, views and event dates

The area around Ziano Piacentino lies along the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli Piacentini. Cantine Marasi offers typical local DOC wines, including the lively Gutturnio as well as Barbera and Bonarda. Visits to Cantine Marasi are possible by prior telephone appointment. Be sure to plan your call accordingly.

Ziano Piacentino also has a panoramic terrace with three seats and views of the surrounding hills. The Festa dell'Uva takes place every year in September and, together with events in other nearby towns, forms part of the Val Tidone Wine Fest. Check the exact festival dates before your trip.

Cycling tours and trails

The second part of a two-day cycling tour through the province of Piacenza and the Val Tidone passes through Vicobarone, Montalbo, Seminò and Ziano Piacentino. This route note places Ziano within a tour with several named stops, giving the cycling trip a broader scope than a visit to a single town.

The old Sentiero dei „3 ponti“ connects Montalbo with Vicomarino. Near the Sacello di San Lupo, there is a well-known, pleasantly hilly stretch of trail among the vineyards. It can be travelled by car, motorcycle or bicycle, or on foot. The two trail descriptions have different emphases: the Sentiero names the places it connects, while the section near the Sacello describes the vineyard setting, terrain and possible ways of getting around.

Churches, castle and history

The Chiesa di San Paolo Apostolo stands among the hills and dates from the 18th to 19th centuries. An earlier church on the site is documented as far back as 1373. Inside are a 19th-century Stations of the Cross by the painter Luigi Achille, as well as paintings by the contemporary artist Ulisse Sartini. The distinction matters for understanding the dates: 1373 refers to the earlier church, while the artworks described date from later periods.

Castello di Montalbo was rebuilt in the 16th century on the ruins of an earlier medieval fortification and is privately owned. Of its original hexagonal floor plan, three complete sides and a shorter fourth side remain today; they are topped by an ornate balustrade. The site thus retains traces of both its former floor plan and the distinctive form of its surviving sides.

The Sacello di San Lupo was rebuilt during the 19th century. Over the centuries, it developed into a well-known Christian pilgrimage site. Its architectural history and religious significance add another perspective on the area's history, alongside the architectural details of the church and Castello.
