Torre Maina lies in the valley of the Tiepido stream. Here, a distinctive transitional landscape, trails for different activities and historic buildings come together. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: a stage of the Via Romea Germanica Imperiale, a nature trail on foot or by bicycle, or the history of the area. The landscape along Via Vandelli, the tower that gave the place its name and the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo give you specific points of reference for understanding Torre Maina.

Trails and Landscape

The Via Romea Germanica Imperiale includes a stage from Modena to Torre Maina. The Percorso Natura del Tiepido runs from Rio Piodo to Torre Maina and can be used on foot or by bicycle. When planning, the trails differ in their named starting points; the Percorso Natura also offers a choice of how to travel. If you are looking for a hiking stage, the Via Romea is associated with the Modena–Torre Maina section. For a route that can also be completed by bicycle, the Tiepido trail is a suitable option.

Via Vandelli offers another perspective on the landscape. On the section near Torre Maina, the plain gives way to the first hills; as you climb along Via Vandelli, you will encounter clay badlands, one of the area’s defining landscape features. The location in the valley of the Tiepido stream adds the valley floor to this transition. This means you can consider both the area’s setting and the shift from plain to the first hills as separate aspects of your trip planning.

Tower and Church: Traces of History

Torre Maina takes its name from a tall 14th-century tower. The tower belonged to a fortified complex, parts of whose walls, built from river pebbles, remain. Remains of corbels from the projecting defensive structure and traces of the old battlements are visible on the tower. If you are interested in historic architectural forms, you can consider these surviving features together: the masonry and the visible traces on the tower point to different elements of the fortified complex.

Another historic landmark is the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo. It was established in the 10th century as property of the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro in Modena. In 2018, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage declared the church and its associated buildings to be of historic interest. Compared with the tower, the church takes you further back in time and adds its connection to the Benedictine monastery in Modena to the area’s architectural history.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Recurring festivals may also play a part in choosing when to travel. The “Al savunè” soap-football tournament is held every summer in the parish park of Torre Maina. The patron saint’s feast for Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated on June 29; the feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena takes place in May. There are events at different times of the year: in May, on June 29 and during the summer. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, please check the dates for the relevant year.
