Lama Mocogno – Culture, Nature and Leisure
Accommodation in Lama Mocogno
Historic Forms and Nature
Lama Mocogno combines historical themes with natural features and leisure activities. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in architectural history, regional culture or outdoor activities. Seasonal activities in the surrounding area are also among the options you can consider when choosing the focus of your trip.
The monumental Scalinata was built in 1933–34 on the former path between Lama Bassa and Lama Alta. It was completely redesigned between 2017 and 2019. This establishes a clear chronological sequence between its construction and later redesign. The Ponte del Diavolo offers a different perspective on shapes: erosion and weathering formed the 33-metre-long, three-metre-high sandstone formation into an arch. It is located in dense woodland and can be walked along its length. A comparison therefore involves two different forms: a monumental staircase and a sandstone arch shaped by natural forces.
The Natura 2000 site IT4040005 “Alpesigola, Sasso Tignoso e Monte Cantiere” also includes the municipality of Lama Mocogno. Those interested in historic routes will find another point of interest in the Via Vandelli: it passes through Montecenere and Lama Mocogno; its historic route then reaches La Santona.
History and Culture
The Torre di Montecenere is a 13th-century defensive tower in Lama Mocogno. The tower was restored in 1998 and houses a permanent exhibition about the Montecuccoli feudal family. In Pianorso, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul is considered a 17th-century church. The existence of the church “S. Thome de Lama” has been documented since 1220.
The open-air theatre “La Rotonda” is suitable for dance evenings, cabaret, theatre, concerts and discussions; its renovation was completed in 2008. If a particular cultural event is important to your trip, check the event dates in advance. This helps distinguish the activities the venue can host from a specific events calendar.
Leisure and Seasonal Experiences
The Centro “Le Piscine” is located in a large green area near the centre of Lama Mocogno and has three swimming pools. The centre also has two bars with tables and chairs, a large sandy beach area, a children’s playground, a beach volleyball court, a multi-purpose court for tennis and football, table tennis, and a large fitness area. The options there range from swimming and ball and racket sports to exercise in the fitness area.
In the area around Lama Mocogno, the Centro Fondo Lama Mocogno in Piane di Mocogno has more than 40 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Weekly day trips and full-moon snowshoe hikes at night are organised there. These activities offer a different seasonal focus from the facilities at the Centro “Le Piscine”. If you are planning around specific dates, it is advisable to check the latest information before your trip.
The festival “Parmigiano Reggiano da gustare” is held in the town every year on the first weekend of October. Parmigiano Reggiano, made by local dairies, takes centre stage; the festival also features traditional customs, games and other activities. Another culinary tradition of the mountain region is Croccante artigianale del Frignano, a traditional sweet that is still prepared according to a time-honoured recipe.
