When planning a trip to Pavullo Nel Frignano, you can choose from specific trails, cultural destinations and landscapes. The options vary considerably, from a short circular route and hiking and cycling tours to collections, art venues and a protected natural landscape. This lets you plan your time around the subjects that interest you most.

Hiking and cycling

L’Anello del bosco incantato is a circular trail about 2 km long, suitable for families. Along the way, you can scan QR codes to learn more about an animal’s characteristics and listen to its description. The trail length and audio content give this route its own character: it combines a manageable circular route with a specific nature theme.

For more tours, the Carto-Guida dei Sentieri del territorio di Pavullo nel Frignano provides an overview of different trail categories. The edition, updated in February 2025, includes 17 hiking trails, four historic routes and eight new MTB and e-bike routes. As the range of routes may change, it is worth checking the latest information before making specific plans. The categories help with orientation: in addition to hiking trails, historic routes and mountain biking and e-bike options are listed separately.

The Sentiero CAI 500 Val Panaro describes a different kind of trail. It crosses the entire municipal area of Pavullo Nel Frignano from north to south and connects it with the town of Sestola. This clearly distinguishes it from the circular trail of about 2 km: here, the focus is on crossing the municipal area, whereas the shorter route offers a loop with QR content.

Castle, collections and art

Castello di Montecuccolo stands on a rocky spur and overlooks the valleys of the Scoltenna and Leo streams. Guided tours of the complex and of the CEM Centro Museale di Montecuccolo’s permanent and temporary collections are available at the castle. Tours must be booked at least seven days before the desired date; allow for this lead time when planning.

The CEM’s art collections include “Donazione” by Raffaele Biolchini and “Il Paese Ritrovato” by Gino Covili. The centre also houses the collection of the Museo Naturalistico del Frignano. Art and natural history therefore each have their own place in the collections. If you are interested in the castle, you can consider the complex and the collections together; a guided tour requires booking well in advance.

In Lavacchio, the Museo en plein air del Frignano displays sculptures, paintings and mosaics by national and international artists from the 1980s. Also in Lavacchio is the Chiesa di Sant’Anna. It is considered one of the most significant examples of a 17th-century rural church in the area. Lavacchio thus offers different cultural interests, with artworks from the 1980s and an example of 17th-century rural church architecture.

La Via delle Fiabe takes a different approach: this artistic and tourist trail starts in Pavullo and runs through nineteen hamlets. Along the way, visitors encounter figures and anecdotes that tell of the history and traditions of the Pavullo area. While the collections bring together specific art and nature themes, this trail draws attention to the area’s stories and traditions.

Landscape and nature reserve

The Riserva Naturale Sassoguidano covers 280 hectares in the municipality of Pavullo Nel Frignano. It includes a wooded plateau, the rocky ridge of Cinghio di Malvarone and the valley of the Lerna stream. These named landscape features provide specific points of reference for Pavullo’s nature theme: a plateau, a rocky ridge and a stream valley. Together with the view from Castello di Montecuccolo over the valleys of the Scoltenna and Leo, they illustrate the different landscape features among the destinations covered here.
