Discover Balze
Accommodation in Balze
Balze combines protected landscapes with hiking trails, historical connections and winter sports. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Balze, first decide whether nature, hiking or a winter focus is your priority.
Forests, habitats and panoramic views
In the Natura 2000 site IT4080008, forests cover just under 60 percent of the area. The protected area includes 19 habitats of Community interest, including seven priority habitats; together, these habitats cover about one third of the site. The Rupi delle Balze are also part of this protected area. From Balze, the exceptional panoramic view stretches from the Riviera Romagnola and Monte Amiata across the Monti Sibillini and Gran Sasso to the Alps. Those interested in both protected habitats and sweeping views will find two different perspectives on the landscape here.
Historic trails and the Eremo di Sant'Alberico
The hiking trail between Balze and Capanne, laid out in the 19th century, still has its original, solid stone paving. The Eremo di Sant'Alberico lies south of Balze at an altitude of 1,147 m. The two landmarks offer different points of interest: the trail is notable for its historic paving, while the Eremo stands out for its location south of Balze and its stated altitude.
The Verghereto–Balze stage
The Verghereto–Balze stage is 10.6 km long and rated T. It passes the Cascate del Tevere, the historic sources of the Tiber and the Falesia di Balze. The latter is considered a meeting point for many climbers. If you are interested in climbing as well as hiking, the Falesia is a specific point of interest along the stage. This route can therefore be assessed not only by its length but also by the named points along the way.
Hiking and winter sports on Monte Fumaiolo
The Monte Fumaiolo area has numerous hiking trails through beech and coniferous forests that can be enjoyed year-round. There is also a 5 km cross-country skiing loop, considered moderately difficult, which reaches the sources of the Tiber. In terms of distance, the loop is shorter than the 10.6 km Verghereto–Balze stage; however, they are different activities. The cross-country skiing loop is rated moderately difficult, while the hiking stage is marked T. This allows you to compare the routes by activity, length and their respective stated ratings.
For alpine skiing, a description updated on July 3, 2024, lists a ski lift serving three red runs: one is 1 km long, and the other two are 800 m each. The runs have artificial snowmaking. The same description lists the Fumipark as a snowboard park with jumps, boxes and rails. If you are planning to enjoy these winter options, check that they are currently operating before your trip.
