Riverside Landscape and Cycling

Ravalle lies directly alongside the embankment of the Po Grande. Its connection to the river shapes the character of the place; the surrounding agricultural landscape is also one of its valuable features. The panoramic road Via Martelli – Via Beccari – Via Pontisette is also important for regional orientation. It connects Ravalle with the surrounding settlements and the city of Ferrara. The road situates Ravalle within the region, while the agricultural landscape provides a second connection to the scenery alongside the river. Those choosing a destination for cycling and local history will find points of interest in Ravalle, without reducing the place to just one theme.

Two points of reference are relevant for cycling travellers: the “Destra Po” cycling tourism route is near Ravalle. A low-traffic road route below the Po embankment passes by Ravalle. Ravalle is part of Cluster 6, which includes the localities of Porporana, Ravalle and Casaglia. For this cluster, enhancing the landscape along EuroVelo 8 on the Destra Po is planned as a strategy for developing cycling tourism. The proximity of the Destra Po and the planned enhancement of EuroVelo 8 are distinct points of reference: one is a geographical relationship, the other a planned development goal.

History Along the River

Ravalle appears in early historical records: a document from 903 mentions the place, and Ravalle is recorded under the name “Ravallis” in the Statuti Ferraresi of 1287. These written references add an early perspective to the history of its buildings and its commemorative heritage. The course of the Po is also part of the local history. A change in the river’s course in the 12th century separated Ravalle from nearby Stienta. Stienta remained on the opposite bank, in Venetian territory. The river is therefore both part of Ravalle’s landscape and a historical divide between the places.

Architectural Heritage and Remembrance

One cultural point of interest is the Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo. The church dates back to 1432 and was completely restored in 1784. It is of particular artistic and architectural interest. To understand its history, it is helpful to distinguish between the dates: 1432 marks its origins, while 1784 marks its complete restoration. For travellers interested in architecture, the church offers a tangible connection to Ravalle’s architectural history.

At Via Carlo Martelli 76, the Lapide Commemorativa ai Caduti is located on the façade of the former primary school. The memorial is dedicated to Ravalle’s fallen in the First World War. The address and building locate the memorial site, while the dedication identifies its historical significance. Together with the church, it reveals another aspect of local history: remembrance of Ravalle’s fallen alongside its religious architecture.
