Lagosanto combines a long local history with the history of land reclamation. The Marozzo pumping station, the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve and an exhibition in the Torre dell’Orologio offer specific insights into the area. Comacchio and its Valli are a few kilometres away and add to the regional context.

Local History Between Lago and Lagosanto

The origins of Lagosanto are considered unknown. They are thought to date back to pre-Roman times and to be connected with nearby Spina. The town centre first developed as Lago. Around the year 1000, it became Lagosanto because the Benedictine monk S. Appiano lived and died there. These early traces of the name and settlement provide a long time frame for the town’s history, although its origins cannot be considered certain.

The present-day parish church of Santa Maria della Neve also tells of several building phases: in 1632, it was decided to rebuild it on the site of the earlier church; it was consecrated on 4 January 1644. The dates mark two distinct stages—the decision to build and the consecration. Across the landscape, land reclamation and drainage transformed the area profoundly and made Lagosanto an agricultural centre.

Until the 1970s, the Canale di Marozzo ran through the town. As a historic transport route, it was possibly the oldest in the Basso Ferrarese. This former role is part of the town’s history; it does not describe a current navigable waterway.

Marozzo Pumping Station: Technology and Landscape

The Marozzo pumping station is located near Marozzo di Lagosanto, on an arm of the Po di Volano. It made it possible to drain Valle Gallare and the surrounding areas. The facility therefore represents a specific transformation of the landscape: water management and land reclamation shaped the area’s development and its agricultural character.

The historic pumping station remained in operation until 1986. A new, modern pumping station was then built nearby; the older facility was decommissioned and abandoned. The Casa della memoria is located in the area of the former station. It is intended to be the first museum facility within a wider project: plans call for the complete structural restoration of the former pumping station as a museum and documentation centre on mechanical land drainage. The pumping station grounds are closed to the public.

Exhibitions, Fair History and Activities

The Torre dell’Orologio in Lagosanto houses a permanent exhibition featuring a local herbarium. Before planning a visit, check whether the exhibition is open to visitors. Another connection to local culture is the Antica Fiera d’Agosto: the 2025 edition was listed as the 451st edition. If the fair is relevant to your stay, check the exact event dates for your travel period.

Anyone wishing to try archery can contact the Compagnia Arcieri Laghesi: after getting in touch by phone, interested visitors are invited to learn about the sport. The archery range is available to experienced visitors holidaying in the area. Contact the Compagnia directly before your visit to arrange contact and use of the range.

The now-vanished figure of the fiocinino, a local fisherman, is also part of the area’s cultural history. A past programme titled “Le giornate del fiocinino” paid tribute to this figure. It offers another insight into local history alongside the themes of land drainage, agriculture and church architecture.

Lagosanto as a Place to Stay

If you are considering Lagosanto as a place to stay, its different themes can help put your decision in context: the pumping station points to the transformation of the landscape, while the church, herbarium and fair reveal other facets of local cultural history. Comacchio and its Valli are a few kilometres away. This allows you to consider Lagosanto as a destination in its own right while also placing it in its regional context.
