Altedo can be explored through its cultural history and cycling. The Torre Gnudi, Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, and Locanda Napoleone represent different chapters in the town’s history. A cycling route connects Malalbergo with the districts of Pegola and Altedo. When planning, you can weigh up whether the buildings and historical details or the scenery along the cycling route should shape your stay.

Buildings and History

The Torre Gnudi is about six metres high and has a footprint no larger than 4.5 metres. Its history of use is also noteworthy: the lower part of the tower served as an icehouse in the early years of the 19th century. There is a clear limitation to bear in mind when visiting: the Torre Gnudi can be viewed from the outside, but it is not possible to enter. Its dimensions and former use give the building a tangible historical context even without an interior visit.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista houses a 16th-century painting attributed to the Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana. The attribution remains part of the description of the work. The bell tower also holds a historical detail: it contains a clock made by Carlantonio Facchini in 1734, which shows the time with just one hand. Despite numerous restorations, the church has retained its exterior architectural lines. The painting, clock, and building history thus offer different perspectives on the same church.

The Locanda Napoleone adds a chapter about transport to this architectural history. The building dates from the 18th century and was built by Count Ferdinando Marescalchi. In 1795, following a reorganisation of the post-coach stops along the Bologna–Ferrara route, it became a post station. The building thus reveals both when it was built and its later role along this route.

The history of archaeological discoveries also reaches far back: the remains of a rural Roman building lie near Altedo. They came to light in the spring of 1992 during the laying of the Minerbio–Cortemaggiore gas pipeline. The find adds an archaeological perspective to the stories of the visible buildings; it belongs to a very different era from the church and the Locanda Napoleone.

Cycling and Scenery

The 14-kilometre cycling route connects Malalbergo with the districts of Pegola and Altedo. The section between Malalbergo and Altedo passes through an agricultural landscape where prized asparagus is grown. Part of this route runs alongside the Navile Canal. These connections and landscape features give you concrete points of reference for planning your route, without specifying a particular journey time or level of difficulty. Check the route conditions locally before planning your ride.
