Scario: Coast, Trails and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Scario
On the Gulf of Policastro, Scario brings together coastal landscapes, named trail destinations and archaeological themes. The Costa degli Infreschi e della Masseta Marine Protected Area stretches from Torre dello Zancale near Marina di Camerota to Scario. This offers different perspectives for planning your trip: boat departures from the harbor into the protected area, a trail to Grotta dell’Acqua, and traces of human settlement dating back to a distant past.
Marine Protected Area and Coastal Features
The marine protected area covers 13,808 km of coastline, with bays, caves, small beaches, anchorages and underwater springs. Along the Costa della Masseta, high limestone cliffs rise up—the foothills of Monte Bulgheria. In the FAI-protected coastal area, a dense, naturally grown holm oak forest reaches the sea and gives way to bare rock. These features range from formations along the shoreline to springs beneath the water’s surface, describing more than just individual stretches of beach.
Boats depart from Scario harbor for the marine protected area daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. If you include this option in your day’s plans, check the times before your visit.
Archaeological Traces
At Riparo del Molare in Masseta di Scario, an archaeological study published in 2005 describes a ten-meter-thick continental deposit with around 20 settlement layers from the Middle Paleolithic. The site draws attention to an early phase of human settlement and to multiple settlement layers at a named location.
The “Centomila anni prima di Scario” museum displays a model of the local landscape as it appeared 100,000 years ago, as well as casts of finds from excavations. These excavations were supported by the Archaeological Superintendency of Salerno and the Department of Archaeology and Art History at the University of Siena. The model and casts offer different perspectives: the model illustrates the landscape of the past, while the casts represent archaeological finds from the excavations.
Trail to Grotta dell’Acqua
On the Sentiero della Grotta dell’Acqua, Torre Spinosa is the first stop. The trail to Grotta dell’Acqua is classified as a tourist trail, difficulty level T. The route is about 4 km long and ends at the beach of the same name; the round trip is estimated to take around two hours on average. The distance and duration are estimates and may vary depending on conditions. Check current trail conditions before setting out; the T classification is no substitute for a current assessment of the trail.
The times given for boat departures and the trail answer different planning questions: the daily time window refers to departures from the harbor, while the approximate duration refers to the round trip on foot. When choosing a hotel in Scario, your trip’s focus can help guide you: the coast brings together natural features on land and underwater, the trail to Grotta dell’Acqua has a named first stop and an estimated round-trip duration, while the museum and Riparo del Molare explore archaeological themes.
