Pioppi – Palazzo Vinciprova, the Coast and the Mediterranean Diet
Accommodation in Pioppi
Pioppi brings together Palazzo Vinciprova and two museums, a rocky coastline and activities centred around the sea. When checked in August 2026, the municipal events calendar listed two events for Pioppi: the 11th edition of the “Festival della Dieta Mediterranea” from 25 July to 20 September 2026, and the 55th edition of the “Sagra del Pesce Azzurro” from 18 to 20 September 2026. Dates and programmes may change. This gives you clearly distinct themes to plan around: the Mediterranean Diet, marine life and nature trails. If you are looking for hotels in Pioppi, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The places and activities differ depending on whether your focus is architecture and exhibitions, the coast or a nature trail.
Palazzo Vinciprova and its museums
Palazzo Vinciprova consists of two side towers connected by a central section. Facing the sea, the building has a portico and a terrace. It is also home to two museums: the MuSea Museo Vivo del Mare is on the ground floor, and the Ecomuseo della Dieta Mediterranea “Ancel Keys” is on the upper floor. The Ecomuseo is on the first floor and comprises five exhibition rooms. Their locations on separate floors clearly distinguish the two subjects within the same building.
The MuSea displays around 100 marine species in tanks spread across three rooms. It opened to the public in 1996. The museum also houses a Turtle Center dedicated to the protection of sea turtles, established as part of the European LIFE TURTLENEST project. Marine species and sea turtle conservation are therefore distinct aspects of what the MuSea offers.
The Ecomuseo preserves Ancel Keys’s personal library, which his family donated to the Municipality of Pollica. The Ecomuseo also organises cooking classes on Cilentan cuisine. The exhibition rooms and cooking classes thus offer two different ways to explore the topic of Mediterranean nutrition: through the collection and exhibitions, and through food.
Rocky coastline and Oasi Blu La Punta
Pioppi’s beach is rocky and stretches along the entire length of the built-up area. Between Pioppi and Acciaroli lies Oasi Blu La Punta, a marine area associated with the WWF. It covers 157 hectares of sea and includes a 600-metre stretch of beach. The sea has been awarded the Blue Flag and Legambiente’s “5 Vele” rating. The description of the beach in town and the specific area figures for the marine zone therefore represent distinct coastal features.
Activities by sea and on land
Oasi Blu offers diving and sea-watching courses, excursions and snorkelling. It also offers activities for monitoring and observing whales and dolphins. The coast of Pioppi is also suitable for boat trips and scuba diving. Visitors interested in the sea can therefore choose from different activities: being in the water, going on excursions and observing marine mammals.
A nature trail is another option described here. It starts in front of the Museo Vivo del Mare and runs for about two kilometres to Pozzo dell’Uva Nera, by a cascade. The trail is not very difficult, but is not always passable in winter. Check current trail conditions before visiting.
Centro Velico Pioppi offers services and activities for all age groups, as well as for beginners and advanced participants. If you are choosing activities based on age or prior experience, this explicitly broad range is a distinct feature alongside the offerings at Oasi Blu and the nature trail.
