Discover Cuccaro Vetere
Accommodation in Cuccaro Vetere
Cuccaro Vetere brings together several different themes for planning a trip: historic religious buildings, local festivals and excursions into the forests beyond the town. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you’d like to combine with your journey.
Religious buildings and monastic history
The Convento di San Francesco was founded in 1333; the surviving ruins belong to the monastery founded in the 14th century. The Chiesa di San Pietro was founded around the year 1000, placing it in a much earlier period. The Chiesa di Santa Teresa was originally dedicated to San Leonardo; its former dedication adds another historical reference to the foundation dates.
The Cappella di Sant’Antonio was founded in 1679; access is available on request and with an advance reservation. The Cappella del Legno Santo houses a reliquary containing a relic of the Legno Santo. The chapel also bears witness to the presence of Italo-Greek monks in the Cuccaro Vetere area; alongside the buildings, the area’s religious history also comes into view.
The connection to the town also extends beyond individual buildings: Cuccaro Vetere is part of the “Tra laure e cenobi” route, the road of the Basilian monks. This route provides an additional point of reference for the monastic history and places the religious sites in context beyond the individual buildings.
Forests and excursions
The forests beyond Cuccaro Vetere include centuries-old chestnut, oak and pine woods. Excursions through this area are possible among streams and lush vegetation. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a different focus from the religious buildings: a wooded area with a variety of tree species, waterways and abundant greenery. Cuccaro Vetere is also one of the municipalities in the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni. This affiliation helps place the town in the context of the national park.
Festivals and local traditions
The “del Legno Santo” fair takes place on Good Friday. If you’re planning a trip around it, check the date for the year you have in mind.
The Palio del Ciuccio takes place in Cuccaro Vetere in August and has been held there for more than forty years. The August date offers a seasonal guide, while its long-running history makes the Palio a distinctive local tradition. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the edition you intend to attend.
The Pastorella cuccarese is also part of local tradition: this traditional Christmas pastry is filled mainly with a mixture of chestnut purée and chocolate. Its connection with Christmas adds a culinary dimension to the local culture alongside the festival dates.
Planning your journey
Cuccaro Vetere can be reached via the SS 18 Paestum–Vallo–Futani bypass, taking the Cuccaro Vetere exit. A bus runs from Vallo Scalo railway station to Cuccaro Vetere. This gives you a specific point of reference for both the road route and the train-and-bus option: the exit on the one hand and the railway station on the other. When planning your trip, check which way of getting there suits your plans.
