Casaburi: Coastal Landscape and History
Accommodation in Casaburi
Spiaggia della Marinella, the cave complex of Capo Palinuro, and the history of winegrowing on Monte San Basilio give the choice of location different facets.

Coast and historic sites nearby
Near Casaburi, Spiaggia della Marinella lies on the Baia del Buondormire. Canoes can be rented at this beach; check whether rentals are available before visiting. At the foot of the hill above the beach, you can also see the remains of the ancient port of Molpa. Here, the bay, beach, and port remains bring the coastal landscape and history together in one place.
The Arco Naturale di Palinuro lies near the mouth of the Mingardo and marks the boundary between Palinuro and Camerota. The natural arch should not be confused with Spiaggia dell’Arco Naturale: this beach was inaccessible on August 30, 2026, due to the risk of falling rocks. Check access again before your trip. In the cave complex of Capo Palinuro, the Grotta Azzurra is the largest and best-known cave.
Hiking, climbing, and landscape
A hiking trail leads to the summit of Molpa hill; from there, panoramic views extend across the coast and inland. At the Falesie della Molpa, several climbing routes follow the rock faces. The two activities offer different focuses: the trail leads to a viewpoint, while the climbing routes run along the rock faces. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a trail with a summit as its destination and climbing on the rock.
The historic landscape also tells of connections between Casaburi and the river mouths. In the 1940s and 1950s, the Arco Naturale di Palinuro, the nearby mouth of the Mingardo, and the surrounding beaches could only be reached from Centola via paths and mule tracks that began near Casaburi. Several farm tracks led from Casaburi to the mouths of the Mingardo and the Lambro. A shortcut to Casaburi described in historical accounts passed through Mediterranean scrubland; farm tracks associated with Casaburi ran through the fertile Piana.
Archaeology and the history of winegrowing
The Antiquarium Palinuro preserves archaeological finds from excavations in the surrounding area. Together with the remains of the ancient port of Molpa, it offers a glimpse of archaeological traces near Casaburi. A historic excursion from Casaburi to Spiaggia della Marinella also included an overnight stay in natural caves on the beach to the left of the river mouth. This belongs to the history of earlier excursions; it is not a statement about current activities at the beach.
A historical account from 2021 describes how, since antiquity, extensive areas in Casaburi on the southern slope of Monte San Basilio had been devoted to winegrowing. Wine produced in the towns on the southern slope was historically exported mainly by sea via Palinuro and Molpa. This history adds an agricultural and economic perspective to the coastal and archaeological themes; it describes past land use, not a present-day wine offering.
