Acerno: Nature, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Acerno
Acerno lies in the heart of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini. Its mountain and valley landscapes, hiking trails, historic buildings and local specialties give the town several facets. If you are looking for hotels in Acerno, these themes can shape your travel plans: nature and hiking interests sit alongside churches, industrial history and local cuisine.
Nature and Hiking Trails
Monte Polveracchio reaches 1,790 meters and has been designated an Oasi Naturalistica since 1988. The Tusciano rises in the mountains of Acerno and flows through its valleys. The summit elevation, river source and course through the valley provide different points of reference in the landscape.
The Fiumara di Tannera is considered a distinctive waterway of the Monti Picentini. It passes through centuries-old beech forests, rocky gorges and streams; the Fiumara route runs through the Gole di Tannera.
Another hiking perspective is offered by stage SI S08 of the Sentiero Italia CAI: it reaches Acerno via the wooded western slope of Monte Polveracchio and includes a descent of 1,000 meters in elevation. When comparing the trails, the Fiumara’s scenery and the elevation profile of SI S08 are the main points of focus.
Industrial History and Ancient Traces
The ruins of one of two historic paper mills are visible in the Acerno valley; the mill probably dates to between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The Acerno Industrial Archaeology Park brings together historical evidence, mining activities, geological resources and landscape features. A footpath leads to it, following the former access route to the public washhouse and the existing municipal Ferriera road.
The ruins of ancient Acerno stand northwest of the present-day settlement. The town’s historical picture therefore includes both ancient traces and industrial remains in the valley and the park.
Churches and Architectural History
The Co-Cathedral of San Donato has a three-aisled floor plan and a barrel vault. It was enriched with Baroque decoration in the 17th and 18th centuries, including a high altar with inlaid marble. Acerno Cathedral has a Latin cross floor plan, a very high central nave and a dome above the broad transept. Its central gate depicts Saint Donatus, bishop of Arezzo and a martyr of the 4th century.
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli dates from around 1504, while the Church of Madonna delle Grazie has been documented since 1436. The former monastery with the Church of Sant'Antonio is also among Acerno’s historical and architectural landmarks.
Local Specialties
Fragolata di Acerno is an artisanal specialty rooted in local tradition. Since 1981, it has been made exclusively from wild strawberries (Fragaria vesca L.) growing in the Acerno area. Local cheese specialties include mozzarella, ricotta and caciocavallo, made from the milk of Podolica cattle from the Acerno area. Fragolata highlights wild strawberries as an ingredient, while the milk of Podolica cattle gives the cheeses their local provenance.
