Churches from different centuries, a historic trading town and local festival traditions give Paupisi several cultural points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Paupisi, its architectural history, religious celebrations or an event with a culinary and cultural program may draw your attention to the destination. These themes differ both in their history and in their character.

Location at Monte Pentime

Paupisi lies at the foot of Monte Pentime and is one of the 14 municipalities in the protected Parco Regionale del Taburno-Camposauro. Monte Pentime identifies a specific mountain setting, while the town’s inclusion in the park places it within a protected area comprising several municipalities. Paupisi can therefore be understood both in terms of its location and within the broader context of the regional park.

Traces of trade and churches

Since the 15th century, Il Funnico served as a sales outlet for goods and local products. Today, it consists of the impressive portal of a fondaco. In the Middle Ages and the centuries that followed, a fondaco served foreign merchants as accommodation, a warehouse and a place to negotiate business. The portal thus points to a place where trade meant more than selling individual goods: accommodation, storage and business negotiations were also part of the fondaco’s function.

The Chiesa Santa Maria del Bosco dates back to the early 18th century. Only the bell tower of the old complex remains; today, it serves as a war memorial. The tower’s architectural history and present-day function mark different layers of time: its origins belong to the church’s history, while the memorial is part of its culture of remembrance.

The Chiesa di Maria Santissima dei Pagani was built between 1907 and 1912, after a valuable icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was found in the Pagani district. The church is also known as the Madonna di Pagani and houses a wooden statue of Saint Anthony. Together with Santa Maria del Bosco, this building introduces a later period: the two churches represent different construction periods, from the early 18th century to the years 1907–1912. The discovery of the icon and the statue of Saint Anthony also give the church in Pagani two specific religious associations.

Religious and secular festival traditions

On June 13, Paupisi celebrates its patron saint with a solemn Mass and a procession through the town’s streets at the Festa di Sant'Antonio da Padova. Secular festivities featuring music and entertainment follow the religious celebration. The Festa thus brings together a religious occasion and a subsequent secular program.

The Sagra del Cecatiello is a historic tradition in Paupisi. At its 2024 edition, held in August, the Festival of Flavors and Street Artists combined food, culture and entertainment. Unlike the Festa di Sant'Antonio, this event focused on culinary and cultural elements as well as street art, while the June celebration honors the patron saint and includes a Mass and procession. The two occasions therefore differ both in theme and in the program described.

For a cultural and historical stay, Il Funnico and the two churches offer different points of interest: the former trading function of a fondaco, a surviving war memorial and the story of an icon.
