Discover Benevento through its riverside setting, Roman architecture, and wide range of museums. The city lies at the confluence of the Sabato and Calore rivers. The Rocca dei Rettori also shapes the landscape: it overlooks the valley where the Sabato flows into the Calore. For a stay focused on culture, there are several distinct highlights—from ancient reliefs and collections spanning different eras to exhibitions and sightseeing tours.

Riverside Setting and Architectural History

The Rocca dei Rettori consists of two connected buildings: a medieval one and a Renaissance one. Its position above the valley links it to the river landscape, while the two periods of construction offer different historical perspectives. The Rocca hosts permanent exhibitions, including the “Uomini eccellenti” section and paintings by Virginia Tomescu Scrocco. There are also temporary exhibitions. The site offers more than an architectural impression; its exhibitions broaden the view of Benevento’s culture.

Roman Traces and Collections

The Arch of Trajan was built between 114 and 117 AD at the beginning of the new Via Traiana to commemorate and honor Emperor Trajan’s rule. Its reliefs also give the monument a clear structure: the side facing the city depicts scenes of peace, while the opposite side depicts military scenes. The contrast between the two sides makes the arch both a monument and a visual narrative.

The Museo del Sannio is the most important museum in the province of Benevento and is among the most significant museums in Campania. It preserves more than 50,000 artifacts, dating from prehistoric times to the present day. The collection includes evidence from the Samnite and Roman periods, the Lombard era, and the 15th to 19th centuries, as well as works by important Italian artists of the 20th century. A large library with an adjoining reading room and a conference hall named after the scholar Giovanni Vergineo round out the museum’s offerings.

Art, Technology and Archaeology

The Museo Arcos houses the Egyptian section of the Museo del Sannio, with finds from a temple of Isis dedicated to Benevento, as well as a contemporary art section. The MUSA – Museo della tecnica e del lavoro in agricoltura – focuses on historic agricultural machinery and also serves as a multimedia educational laboratory. These two sites offer a different focus from the Museo del Sannio’s collections: the emphasis here is on Egyptian finds, contemporary art, or technology and agriculture.

The Geobiolab explores the secrets of nature through virtual reality, scenographic reconstructions, “talking” machines, 3D films, photographs, exhibits, and hands-on laboratories. As of August 2026, it was temporarily closed for extraordinary maintenance; check before visiting to see whether it is still closed. The Complesso Monumentale di Sant'Ilario a Port'Aurea comprises the former church of S. Ilario, an early medieval building, and remains of a complex dating to the imperial period of the 2nd century AD. Free guided tours of the archaeological park and former church are available. As visitor services may change, check availability before your visit.

Tours, Routes and Regional Produce

The Trenino dell'Arte currently offers a tour of Benevento’s historic center, with stops at the city’s main historical and artistic sights. The Ciclopedonale Benevento–Vitulano offers another way to get around; it runs entirely along a protected route and is suitable for everyone. Benevento is also part of the Via Francigena nel Sud. These options offer different experiences: a sightseeing tour with stops at attractions, a protected route, and a connection to a long-distance trail.

Falanghina del Sannio is another regional point of reference. The DOC grape-growing area covers the entire administrative territory of the province of Benevento; it should therefore be understood as a provincial designation. For planning museum visits, the Rete Museale provides information on admission prices, a combined ticket, reservations, and opening days and hours. This makes it possible to connect the cultural themes of your stay with the available visitor services, without reducing the very different eras and places to a single focus.
