Rombiolo lies at an altitude of about 450 metres on the northeastern slope of the Monte Poro plateau. Its location combines with a layered historical heritage to make it a destination to consider: churches from different periods stand in the town and its hamlets, alongside the remains of a former monastery complex. Pecorino del Monte Poro DOP adds a culinary connection to the Monte Poro area to this cultural focus. If you would like to explore history and regional food culture on a trip, Rombiolo offers several specific points of interest.

Churches and Monastery Complexes

The historic centre of Rombiolo is associated with the historical names “Rummiùlu” and “Rumbiòlu”, recorded in the 16th century. The Cappuccini monastery complex, also known as Convento dei Quartieri, stands on the provincial road from Pernocari to Rombiolo. The complex includes the church of Sant'Antonio, with an ancient wooden altar. Beneath one of the cloister arches is also the 17th-century fresco “Il Crocefisso degli Angeli”. The altar and fresco draw attention to two aspects of the same complex: the church’s furnishings and the paintings in the cloister.

On the façade of the church of San Michele Arcangelo, a fresco of Saint Michael is located above the portal; the façade also features two columns with Corinthian capitals. The church of Madonna del Rosario was built in 1860. San Michele is distinguished by its façade details, while Madonna del Rosario is associated with a specific year of construction: together, the churches offer different historical points of interest.

The hamlets of Pernocari, Orsigliadi and Garavati also preserve traces of Rombiolo’s ecclesiastical history. In Pernocari, the church of Santa Filomena was rebuilt after the 1783 earthquake. The Immacolata Church, also known as the church of San Sebastiano, is also located there; it is said to have been built around 1800. The church of San Raffaele in Orsigliadi was built in 1653. The church of Maria Santissima Immacolata in Garavati is said to date back to 1310. These examples bring together construction dates, a rebuilding and cautiously worded dating.

The Ruins of Sant'Agostino

The ruins of the monastery of Sant'Agostino stand on a rise along the road between Presinaci and Pernocari. The surviving parts of the former hermitage include the perimeter walls, the stairway arches and an outdoor seating area called Belvedere. These remains give the site a different historical character from the furnishings of Sant'Antonio or the façade details of San Michele. Visitors interested in architectural history will find different scales here, from an altar and fresco to the visible remains of a former complex.

Pecorino and Regional Food Culture

Rombiolo is part of the Monte Poro area, where sheep are raised and Pecorino del Monte Poro DOP is produced and matured. The cheese is soft or semi-hard and is made exclusively from whole milk from sheep in Calabria. It is available as “fresco”, “semistagionato” and “stagionato”, with maturation or storage periods ranging from 20 days to 24 months. The range therefore spans a considerable period, from fresh to long-aged cheese. In the Monte Poro area, Pecorino is eaten fresh and is also used in traditional regional dishes. This product connects the region’s sheep farming and cheesemaking with its food culture.

Another Point of Interest in Moladi

The public Fontana vecchia di Moladi is located in Moladi. It adds a named point of interest in the hamlet to the churches and monastery complexes. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Rombiolo, the area’s varied themes can help you choose what to explore based on your interests: churches and former monastery complexes sit alongside the regional Pecorino tradition.
