Santa Domenica: Coast, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Santa Domenica
Santa Domenica combines a distinctive coastal landscape with archaeological and historical attractions. At Spiaggia la Scalea, the beach, sandstone cliff and marine nature shape the experience; in Santa Domenica, a museum and visible remains offer insights into different eras. Other named places in the surrounding area also have coastal and technological history to discover. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on the beach and landscape or on culture and history.
The Coast and Access to Spiaggia la Scalea
Spiaggia la Scalea lies at the foot of a sandstone cliff about 70 metres high. There are different ways to get there: the beach is accessible by sea, via a hiking trail through the Mediterranean scrub, or by a nearby staircase from the town. The descriptions thus clearly distinguish between access from the water, a path through the vegetation and a flight of steps.
The marine environment also has its own highlights. The turquoise seabed off Spiaggia la Scalea is rich in marine flora and fauna. At Baia di Formicoli, Posidonia oceanica forms an extensive seagrass meadow just a few metres from the beach. This aquatic plant, which is endemic to the Mediterranean, is a specific nature feature for anyone interested in marine habitats as well as the coastal landscape.
Archaeology in Santa Domenica
The Museo Archeologico e Paleontologico is housed in Palazzo “Fazzari” in Santa Domenica. Its palaeontological section displays fossil remains of marine and land animals. The archaeological tour begins in two prehistoric halls with reconstructions of two burials. Upstairs, Greek finds from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, discovered at the Torre S. Maria site in Ricadi, are on display.
The museum collection also includes Roman amphorae from Baia di Santa Maria. In Roman times, amphorae like these were used to transport food. The tour thus takes visitors from prehistoric burials through Greek finds to objects from everyday Roman life. In addition, remains of early Christian necropolises are visible in Santa Domenica. A prehistoric necropolis with typical domed tombs carved into sandstone was also discovered there. These different finds make burial practices and historical periods a distinct cultural theme alongside coastal attractions.
Coastal and Local History
Torre Marino was built in the early 1800s by Marino Tranfo, a nobleman from Tropea. The tower was constructed on the site of a 16th-century “stazione cavallara”. Horses and riders were stationed there to relay warnings to settlements that could not be reached by the coastal towers. The history of the site thus tells not only of the structure itself, but also of an earlier form of communication along the coast.
Another topic connects the landscape with technological history: Fiumara della Ruffa can be reached from Brivadi via old roads or a steep, uneven mule track. An old hydroelectric power station, built around 1929/1930, stands along the watercourse. The route description and the building’s history offer two different points of reference for planning: the approach is described as steep and uneven, while the power station illustrates the industrial past of the watercourse.
Museums and Other Cultural Sites
Museums in other named places also cover different subjects. The Museo Demo-etnoantropologico e dell’Olio d’oliva is housed in the former “Marcello Sculco” olive mill, a 19th-century building. The Museo del Mare in Capo Vaticano is located in a former Italian Navy observation post, which served as a daytime lighthouse until the mid-20th century. Its collection includes objects related to fishing and navigation, including lamps, harpoons, fishing nets, anchors and oars.
The Museo della Cipolla Rossa di Tropea IGP is part of the Museo Civico di Ricadi, whose five locations are spread across the municipal area. It is near San Nicolò di Ricadi railway station. At Baia di Formicoli, a small church dedicated to the Virgin and Martyr Saint Domenica stands at the end of the valley. It was rebuilt in 1962 beside the site where the ruins of a church and monastery stood until 1600. Museum collections, historic buildings and archaeological remains each offer a different way to explore the cultural themes of the trip.
