In Mileto, history and cultural heritage can be explored through different themes: the archaeological park, the collection at the Museo Statale and historic churches. Together, they give your trip a clear cultural focus. The town’s connection to Norman heritage can also be seen in specific buildings and collection pieces.

Archaeological landscape and Norman heritage

The Parco Archeologico Medievale di Mileto Antica is the first medieval archaeological park in Calabria. It protects a historic cultural landscape of around 40 hectares. On the park’s eastern hill stand the remains of the Abbazia della Santissima Trinità, founded by Ruggero I. The abbey is therefore part of a larger historic area, not just an isolated building. Describing it as a cultural landscape draws attention to the interplay between archaeological heritage and the surrounding landscape.

Around Mileto Antica, olive groves, valleys and old watercourses alternate. These landscape features offer a different way to explore the area’s history than individual architectural elements or finds: they shape the setting in which the historic remains stand. The park is on Strada Provinciale No. 10, which connects Mileto with the Mileto exit of the Autostrada A2 del Mediterraneo. This gives you a specific road connection for orientation, without specifying a journey time.

The collection of the Museo Statale di Mileto

The collection of the Museo Statale di Mileto spans a long period, from the Late Roman Empire to the 19th century. It includes Roman finds and medieval furnishings from the former Benedictine abbey of SS. Trinità and the old cathedral. These include fragments of polychrome stained glass and Norman capitals from the 11th and 12th centuries. The examples bring together different materials and periods; the collection pieces are not limited to a single century.

Another focus is the documentation from the 14th century. It includes the remains of monumental sarcophagi of Ruggero Sanseverino and Giovanna d’Aquino. Other works are attributed to the so-called “Maestro di Mileto.” This is an attribution, so the works are not described as definitively created by a known individual. When considering the collection, it is useful to distinguish between the named sarcophagi and the attributed works.

Churches and works of art in Mileto

The Cattedrale di Maria SS. Assunta e S. Nicola is a church built in the 11th century in the Romanesque-Norman style. It was rebuilt after being destroyed twice by earthquakes. Its history therefore records both its early origins and the subsequent destruction and rebuilding. Those interested in historic architecture will find a different perspective here from the archaeological finds in the park or the objects in the museum.

In the historic center, the Santuario di Santa Maria della Cattolica houses a life-size wooden statue of the Madonna and Child dating from 1700. Together with the cathedral, the sanctuary broadens the view of Mileto’s religious heritage: the buildings represent different periods and emphases, while the statue is a specific work of art from the 18th century.

Routes and travel planning

The Cammino del Normanno connects the Ionian Sea with the Tyrrhenian Sea over 141 kilometers, passes through the Serre and comprises eight stages. On the way to Mileto, the pilgrimage and hiking route reaches the town, described as having been an important Norman capital at the time. This offers another perspective on Mileto’s history: the focus is not only on individual buildings or museum objects, but also on the historical significance attributed to the town along the route. Check the route information before setting out if you plan to include the Cammino in your itinerary.

In Paravati, Villa della Gioia–Cittadella di Maria can be reached by train via Mileto station. If you plan to visit this place as well, check the current timetable before departure. This makes it easier to choose a destination based on its distinct cultural themes.
