Acquaro: Hiking and Church Art
Accommodation in Acquaro
Acquaro is a destination whose main themes span hiking and culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Acquaro, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on trails through the landscape or on church art and architectural history. The local themes offer different starting points: a nine-kilometre circular route, another route with a picnic area, and churches featuring specific works of art and architectural details. This makes it easy to choose how to explore the destination based on your interests, with hiking and culture each offering a distinct focus.
Hiking Routes and Landscapes
The Anello Bellavista is a nine-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in LocalitĂ Gallone-Fanelli in Piani di Acquaro. It runs through the Riserva Naturale Biogenetica Marchesale, which is recognised as a SIC (Site of Community Importance). Two perspectives help characterise the route: its clearly defined circular course and its passage through a recognised protected area.
Piani di Acquaro is characterised by gentle, spring-fed slopes and woods that rise inland from the foothills. The route describes the specific circular course, while the slopes, springs, and woods convey the character of the natural landscape. These are distinct aspects to consider when planning your trip around particular themes.
The Faggio del Re-Speranza route passes through the municipalities of Arena, Acquaro, and Fabrizia. It includes the fenced La Speranza picnic area, where hikers can get a drink, stop for a while, and rest. In contrast to the Anello Bellavista, the main points of reference here are different: for the Anello, its circular layout and length are specified; for Faggio del Re-Speranza, they are the three municipalities it passes through and the opportunity to take a break. The hiking routes can therefore be considered through different features.
Churches, Art, and Local History
The Chiesa Madre in Acquaro was founded in the 14th century and is decorated with 19th-century stucco. It also houses several valuable wooden statues. The Madonna Assunta by Giuseppe De Lorenzo is located in the main altar niche. The Chiesa Madre brings together its founding period, later embellishments, and a specific work of art in a particular location. For art enthusiasts, the Madonna is further identified by its position at the main altar and its attribution to Giuseppe De Lorenzo.
The Chiesetta di San Giuseppe houses a work by the Calabrian sculptor Diego da Careri depicting Saint Francis of Assisi. This work can be compared with the Madonna Assunta by subject and artist: Saint Francis of Assisi is the focus here, while the Madonna Assunta is the subject there; both works of art are attributed to an artist. While the Madonna is also located in the main altar niche, the work in the Chiesetta is identified by its subject and sculptor.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Latini adds an architectural feature to these works of art: its imposing main façade is characterised by Baroque lines and ornamentation. Acquaro’s history also includes the earthquake of 1783, which almost completely destroyed the historic settlement. Thus, specific features of church art and architecture sit alongside a dramatic event in the town’s history.
